The amount of torque applied to the crankshaft can be 100PSI multiplied by the surface area (2 dimensions) of the top of a piston. In addition, large engines and small engines will be measured in the same way (compared to the same orifice) but a small leak in a large engine would be a large leak in a small engine. Although a compression tester alone won't give you a detailed picture of your engine's health, it can (and should) be used first if there is any reason to believe that a problem might exist.Any pressure above 15 psi (100 kPa) will function just as well for measurement purposes although the sound of leaks will not be quite as loud.
