The suit was partly inspired by Noh theatre styles, and became an icon not only of the film – as it appears on the movie poster, for instance – but of Byrne himself. One of the main draws of Stop Making Sense is in Talking Heads’ deviations from studio counterparts, particularly the acoustic-led renditions offered in the record’s opening sequence of tracks. It also includes songs from the solo career of frontman David Byrne and by Tom Tom Club, the side project of the drummer and bassist, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth.

The first quarter or so of the performance swells gradually until the explosive, strutting funk apex of ‘Burning Down The House’, the major hit single from Speaking In Tongues. For the 1999 re-release, these songs were no longer included in sequence with the rest of the footage. All tracks are written by David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, Tina Weymouth, except where noted No. He introduces " Psycho Killer" by saying he wants to play a tape, but in reality a Roland TR-808 drum machine starts playing from the mixing board.

I have had the luxury of owning both the original Columbia Home Video expanded “Special Edition” VHS tape and Japanese laserdisc, and the only positive I can provide here is that this vinyl edition has a warmer soundstage than the original home video release, which suffers from excessive highs in both the Hi-Fi and PCM soundtracks. The concert film presents a retrospective of the band to that point, with a performance that weaves together songs from all six of their albums. A record as essential as the first five Talking Heads LPs, Stop Making Sense remains the perfect live album.Weymouth praises Demme as a collaborator: “Jonathan was a very enthusiastic, highly adaptive, and imaginative guy who was just as good a listener as he was a talker and collaborator. We’re granted a behind-the-scenes look at the stage production, its rehearsals, and nervy build up, as we get a peek at snaps of the group and the concert attendees who are seldom seen in the gig video.

While it focuses mainly on music by Talking Heads but does include a few songs recorded outside the band: ‘Genius Of Love’ by Weymouth and Frantz’s side-project Tom Tom Club and ‘What A Day That Was’ and ‘Big Business’ from Byrne’s 1981 album, The Catherine Wheel. A career-spanning set featuring eighteen tracks, the Stop Making Sense performances took place a few months after the release of their fifth album Speaking in Tongues. It's quite simply a marvel - an artful document of an incredibly creative band at the height of their power, as individual musicians but more importantly as a collective entity.

And if you like the full length of the tracks played during their concerts at that time you will be pleased.

As often happens, the songs got an added energy when we perform them live and were inspired by having an audience. The soundtrack is just as essential, given the impeccable performance of some of Talking Heads best songs from 'Psycho Killer' to 'Life During Wartime', 'Once In A Lifetime' and even Tom Tom Club's 'Genius Of Love'. Rhino’s 2LP reissue preempts the fortieth anniversary of Talking Heads’ set of four performances at Hollywood’s The Pantages Theatre in December 1983. Stop Making Sense is considered by many critics to be one of the greatest concert films of all time, and a cult classic. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since. If Warner/Rhino were ever to consider a vinyl reissue of “Stop Making Sense” in their “Start You Ear Off Right” series (or even as an RSD exclusive), I would definitely hope they visit the original (sic) rough cut source, and avoid the reworked/edited version that became the original album release (with the synth drums on many tracks) or the “Special Edition” re-issue that tried to present the entire song lineup but had to incorporate addition drastic edits to fit it onto the limited space of Compact Disc. That summer, the song was in heavy rotation on radio and MTV, helping the song become the band’s first top 10 hit in America.
