About this deal

We hope this post helps you weigh up the best option to tackle your boards, so you can recapture the glee you felt when you first discovered your hardwood floor. Both did the job, but the Bona was slightly wetter so easier to work with, and a little went a long way. Now you’ve draught proofed your floorboards, or at least have some ideas on how to go about it, why not read our post on fixing a draughty door.

These come in the form of tube-like rolls (such as DraughtEx) that are easily pushed into the spaces between floorboards, assuming that the correct and accurate diameters have previously been taken into account. If you live in a period home with original wood flooring you may know how draughty these gaps can be, but you might still be surprised to know just how much heat is being lost through the spaces between your floorboards. I bought a set of sealant smoothing tools by 'No Nonsense' to get a perfect finish and personally wouln't attempt it without these cos its a messy job!I’d go and choose your new carpet and underlay then also ask if they’ve any cheap roll ends they can throw over the underlay until you’re ready for the proper carpet. DraughtEx comes supplied with a free applicator and comes in 3 sizes, thin for gaps of 3mm or less, standard for gaps of 2 – 7mm, and large for gaps of 6-11mm. The DIY options were messy and time-consuming, and the commercial products used permanent adhesives or sealants.

Plumbers are normally my nemesis because they often gently remove floorboards with crowbars, cut them with angle grinders or even munch cut them with spade bits and refit them with cheap plasterboard screws, I spend endless weeks of my life every year on repairing or replacing previously perfectly acceptable flooring due to the moronic hand of 'the plumber' who beats 'the sparks' by some margin. Chimney - unused, now stuffed tight with two pillows in a bin bag, and there is no draught coming down there any more, so not that. Apart from destroying the patina, the surface can be destabilised – for example wood-boring beetle larvae may have been busy tunnelling below the surface and if you take off the top layer the unsightly, worm-ridden wood will be on view. These specific flooring fillers have been specially designed to give a long-lasting finish and with a good range of colours so you can match it to the shade or stain of your floors. Featured on one of More4's property seasons, Sarah Beeny used DraughtEx to show viewers how to seal gaps in original wood floorboards. It resists vacuuming and has definitely made a difference on draught reduction and consequently ambient temperature. Floorboards are usually secured with long nails or clouts and it is all too easy to damage floorboards as they are lifted, particularly if they are worn. I myself have pondered this, and have seen a squahy foam cord that is made from the material that expanding ear plugs are made from that can be squashed and fitted into the gap, where it will expand filling the gap. The only way I'd know for sure would be to put up a curtain rail, and hang curtains all across those doors, but that's a whole separate project.

If you are on a small budget, then the traditional technique of papier-mâché may be the best option. Once the floorboard filler has been inserted into the gap it will expand until it fills the entire width of the gap. DraughtEx is a proven floorboard gap filler which is designed to reduce cold draughts created by the gaps between your floorboards and improve the comfort and energy efficiency of your home.DraughtEx is designed to expand and contract with the movement pattern of the timber and will therefore remain in place, retaining the insulation and preventing cold draughts. Add all these tiny gaps together and you could find that the spaces between your floorboards add up to the size of an open window.

Please note: StopGap is not suitable for tongue and groove boards due to the shape of the gaps in this type of flooring. StopGap was chosen once again by The Guardian as one of the best ways to protect your home from the cold. You can find out by pulling up the corner of your carpet, or looking for air bricks on the outside of the property at the bottom of the walls – these will signify a suspended timber floor. A couple of new products claim to let you draught-proof floorboards quickly and neatly, plus there are old-fashioned DIY methods. Is it worth putting the ply down or laying mineral wool under floorboards , or will good underlay and carpet be enough?Easy to install with the free applicator, DraughtEx requires no adhesives and compliments the overall finish of your floorboards. For ease of application and results the V-shaped plastic gap filler that springs apart to wins hands down, but for those on a tight budget or for those that have funny shaped gaps wider than 8mm then the papier-mâché solution is best. Cold air naturally circulates below floorboards allowing draughts to come through the gaps, into the room and chill your toes! When I realised it was all down to the cold air coming from the gaps in the floorboards I thought finding an effective filler would be easy, but I was wrong.
