About this deal

Captain Nicholls comes to Joey's defense and instructs that he be given more food: he is to be the Captain's horse and therefore should not lose conditioning. When he hears Albert's story, the grandfather sells Joey to Albert for one penny, as long as Albert promises to keep Emilie's memory alive. W. Reed and was dated 1917, and showed a British cavalry charge on German lines, with horses entangled in barbed wire. The bond between horse and master is sweet and profound, and a love of animals shows the commonality between people on both sides of the conflict.

The cavalry regiment is eventually sent by boat to France, where the troops will join the front lines. Over the course of the conflict, newer and more protective technologies, like armored tanks, replaced cavalry units. After a summer working on the farm for Emilie's grandfather, the horses have to leave to follow the German army and pull artillery guns. Joey is first introduced to us as a foal who lives in the South West of England, in the county of Dorset. In terms of his writing career, Morpurgo is a former Children's Laureate, the highest honor a children's author can receive in Great Britain.

Events are told by a sensitive animal, albeit one with limited understanding of human machinations; this seems to highlight the senselessness of the destruction.

She is tiny and frail, having been very ill, but she is cheered enormously by the arrival of Joey and Topthorn. With his wife, Morpurgo had founded Farms for City Children, a charity where inner city children live and work on rural farms for a week. The Germans allow Emilie and her grandfather, who live in a farm near the front lines, to care for Joey and Topthorn. The book was originally supposed to end with Joey being sold to a butcher for horse meat, and Emilie's grandfather giving an enamel horse pin to Albert to remember Joey by.

Determined to keep Joey, Albert does what he must: His “gentle words and kindnesses of the past” (14) are replaced with shouts and flashes of a whip “whenever [Albert] felt [Joey isn’t] giving it [his] best” (14). Perhaps the most widely regarded novel about the extreme mental and physical trauma that soldiers endured during the first World War, Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front was first published in German in 1928. He urges the cruel man not to go higher because he will pay any amount necessary to win back Emilie’s horse. So I did as I was told and I stood back and I watched him, and I could see that he related wonderfully to the animals, totally silently, never spoke to the other kids at all, and then I came in the last evening, which I always used to do, to read them a story. Emilie's grandfather tells Albert about how Joey and Topthorn came to their farm, and that Emilie had lost the will to live after they were taken from her, with Emilie fading away and dying at just 15 years old. The soldiers are out of money and at a loss for what to do when Grandfather stands up in the crowd and places a higher bid. The last horse Trooper Warren rode was shot out from under him, but Joey helps him find the strength and courage to ride again.
