About this deal

The Leviathan is a brilliantly atmospheric tale of mystery that speaks of myths and monsters, set against the backdrop of the 17th century’s obsession with witchcraft and superstition. Narrated with spectacular economy, in a thudding, rhythmic staccato studded with local vernacular, the book deftly folds themes of pride, masculinity and ecological ruin into its central story: the visceral vengeance quest that ensues after a fellow miner makes off with Michael’s life-changing haul of gold.

Graham Masterton on the Night Warriors Series “I have always been interested in the significance of dreams. I was offered this as a digital Arc, and hesitated over the marketing/publicity comparisons ‘perfect for fans of The Essex Serpent and Once Upon A River’. Andrews manages to craft a tale that had my heart racing and reading into the dead of night; a fitting ambience for the compellingly dark tones of the novel which Andrews expertly delivers. A great mystery unravels before Thomas and he must try to figure out what has happened and whether it is superstition or a more sinister force at play. It’s pacing was perfect, the switching of the timelines was clear and concise (sometimes timeline switching can be confusing if it’s not executed properly), and more importantly the story keeps your hooked from the very first page. With civil war tearing England apart, reluctant soldier Thomas Treadwater is summoned home by his sister, who accuses a new servant of improper conduct with their widowed father.

The Leviathan by Rosie Andrews | Goodreads

The story was a fantastic read, well written, with the story weaving in and out of a series of ever unfurling horrors, that Thomas must try to get to the bottom of, and live with the consequence of the actions he takes. She’s going to sell it off because her life is not in Trinidad any more and then finds that she can’t for various mysterious, supernatural reasons. If you look at events like Brexit, the coming to power of Trump, the pandemic and the question of individual rights versus our responsibilities to wider society, it’s clear that these questions from the 17th century haven’t been resolved. ROSIE: Isolation – even today Norfolk has no motorways, making it a perfect place to situate a gothic story that relies on characters feeling vulnerable (and on a pragmatic note, being able to engage in all sorts of subterfuge). This novel is set in a time of war, political tension, and religious upheaval, where the church still cried witches when the unknown (or unwanted) was happening. There is a richness of language and description within this novel which retains its natural conversation throughout, completely hooking you into Thomas' narrative.

Norfolk itself was fairly divided during the Civil War, which reflects my protagonist’s feelings about being a soldier, and his later internal conflicts. It was an intense story, with fantastic use of timeline switching to keep you really on your toes, and character development taking you by surprise at times. Young Tom however, fiery and rebellious, brings some disgrace upon himself, and is dismissed by Milton. With the actual construction of the sentences, I almost don’t feel like I’m writing at all – I feel like I’m a body and my hands are moving over the keyboard. As the weeks passed, nobody missed a deadline, nobody added in anything that was shit; you didn’t want to be the one to do it. And for every piece there was somebody in the room who would say “I can’t stand it, it’s overdone”, it’s too this, it’s too that.
