About this deal

I also liked that it was realised from what seemed like both the eye level and the psychological perspective of the child: thus no humans other than Mother appear in the story.

The reader can see through the illustrations that the boy is getting bigger, but he just doesn't notice, sending out a message that children don't often realise how they grow day to day, month to month. An interesting extension I have used in the past is to look at cave growth – stalagmites, stalactites and the unique plants and fungi found in this environment. I can see it being liked more by parents and grandparents than children themselves, though children should like the seasonal illustrations and the playful exuberance of the boy.But when winter comes along and his last year’s pants are too tight and his sleeves too short, he realizes that he must have grown, too! They see the first signs of spring growing in the fields and the little boy asks his mother if he and the puppy will grow too. Acclaimed illustrator Helen Oxenbury, famous for picture books like We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, has provided new, contemporary illustrations to bring the book into the 21st Century.

Originally published in 1947 this eternal story of childhood impatience and the reward of being patience, takes on a new lease of life with Helen Oxenbury’s gorgeous, fresh illustrations which follow a little boy and his mother through a whole year of growth. I think the way this story is written using lots of repetition and constantly relating to the seasons and nature changing shows the reader that the little boy is growing as everything is changing however, you feel a sense of sympathy in case he isn’t! With all of the changes that he can see taking place around him, he is concerned that he doesnt seem to be growing. On the opening page, it is early spring, with light snow falling and buds just appearing on the trees. The boy observes the seasons as spring turns into summer and then the autumn, and as the seasons change, the corn grows, the pears ripen and the animals grow too: the dog is now almost a grown up, and the chicks turned to hens. Good book for the end of the day or in conjunction with seasons and growth of plants and animals etc.
