About this deal

Rose’s father tries to encourage her to follow in his artistic footsteps, but Rose doesn’t have her father’s talent. He encourages her throughout the book while he paints her mothers portrait (she draws crude sketches of this process taking place). Obviously it would be inappropriate for Paris to like Rose back, considering she is only 13, and yet I want Rose to be happy!

When the family get to go to Scotland for hogmanay many things happen, as nurse Budd feeds Beth a cordial to supposedly calm her this the bottle is emptied too quick and a doctor is needed. Even Papa seems out of his element there, though he sits dutifully beside Mama for half an hour every day, resolutely keeping her company.I can think of only one of her books (an early thriller, Snap) where the man who was open to kissing a thirteen-year-old girl was explicitly depicted as a pedophile. He has won numerous awards for his picture books, including the Sheffield Children's Book Award and the 2001 Children's Book Award. She lives in a beautiful house with her family, has the best clothes and books, and takes horse-riding lessons.

The time the story is set in changed the way everyone talked and the manners and social etiquette of parties and other occasions. The Rose River rises below Mount Cobbler, west of the Cobbler Plateau and the Barry Mountains, at an elevation exceeding 1,000 metres (3,300ft) above sea level. That is meant to be a deadly secret, but I’m actually rather proud to have a father who was once a criminal. As much as I loved the Hetty Feather series when I was younger, I’m not a huge fan of Hetty’s appearances in this book nor in Clover Moon. I was frustrated but I Love Jacqueline Wilson and her Victorian books and Clover and Hetty and if there was another book I would give Rose another chance because she had so much potential! You know very well that my father would be delighted to introduce you to the members of the Caledonian Club,’ Mama needled him. It’s not necessary to have read Hetty Feather or Clover Moon to enjoy it, but if you haven’t read them, they are well worth a read too! It’s especially bizarre considering that in this book, the kiss being discovered motivates Rose’s family to send her off to school, the way she’s always wanted, leading to the closest this book is going to get to a happy ending.

But when a young artist friend of her father, Paris Walker, visits the house, Rose starts to find herself more interested in art. Rose is a 13 year old [1] girl with pale skin, brown eyes and long, straight, dark brown hair tied back in a simple ponytail. All in all, I found this novel very interesting and I have taken in a lot of information on different perspectives and how lives were in the Victorian times. Yet if you had to have her family send her to boarding school out of concern for her virtue, there was no reason for the person she was kissing to be an adult. She was very two-faced, acting polite, pleasant and good-natured towards the parents but harsh towards the children and even barbaric for putting Beth through such danger. There was a large difference on education, with Rose's twin brother being applauded for going to school, and encouraged to find passions and a career, whereas Rose, who is desperate to learn in a school, is stuck at home preparing to be a well-functioning lady in the Victorian period. I don’t bother with Mama’s books in the cabinet in the drawing room as they are silly romantic tosh. During the book rose develops a crush on a young artist named Paris Walker, she grows very attached as he shows interest in her artistic ability when other snub her.

Mama hadn’t minded Papa’s wild ways when, as a youth, he travelled up to Scotland to paint the mountains and lochs, paying his way by doing portraits of aristocratic lairds or rich industrialists. I couldn't help but psychologise Rose's parents - Rose and her mum are more alike than they believe which is why she's so critical with her. He’s very proud of his brocade waistcoat, and is desperate for a pocket watch and chain to wear with it.
