About this deal

Many of the papers were deposited in the library a few months after Lovecraft's death in 1937; others have been added by gift and purchase over the years. It’s considered by many to be a blend of horror and science fiction, representing something of a genre shift for Lovecraft in the 1930s.

The Lurker at the Threshold (a 50,000-word novel) contains about 1,200 words by Lovecraft, most of it taken from a fragment entitled " Of Evill Sorceries Done in New England" (see B-i-42), the balance from a fragment now titled " The Rose Window" (see B-ii-322). A bunch of stories stood out for me as being genuine, page-turning excitement: The Colour Out of Space, The Dunwich Horror, The Whisperer in Darkness, Dreams in the Witch House, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and The Case of Charles Dexter Ward were all outstanding pieces of spookery that still managed to give me chills nearly 100 years after the time of writing, and that is one heck of an accomplishment. The Mound is another classic Lovecraft novella detailing a rich (but much less benign) non-human culture. As Olmstead embarks on a tour of the town — having heard vague, superstitious warnings from outsiders — he detects something strange about its citizens. I did not include collaborations or revisions because some of those works may still be under the co-author’s copyright. Indeed, I am more likely to read this edition because having Lovecraft's work split into several smaller volumes instead of one breeze-block of a thing is much easier on my wrists, plus the fabric covers are a joy to hold. The books may not be 'complete' in that every one of Lovecraft's stories are present, however, all the major ones and most well known are here. With elegant embossed cover-designs and colored endpapers, these editions make wonderful gifts or collectibles to treasure forever.

THE RATS IN THE WALLS is another gothic masterpiece recounting the tale of Delapore, an American who decides to cross the pond and move to England into his ancestral manor, the ill-fated Exham Priory. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. Like him or hate him, Lovecraft casts a long, dark shadow over all of American fantasy and horror, and in fact, the stories are mostly pretty good, in a very dated way. I would encourage anyone wanting a good portable and readable set of Lovecraftian horror to get a hold of this set.It doesn’t even take until the conclusion of the Preface or Introduction to immediately recognize that this is not the truth, and you’re immediately crushed that “Evil Dead” is no longer the cinematic embodiment of the ruling truths as to the profundities of existence. Subsequent critics consider them part of the Cthulhu Mythos, but often split this into the original "Lovecraft Mythos" and the later and lesser "Derleth Mythos". It seriously took a publisher how much of a century to title a collection of Lovecraft's stories "Necronomicon"?
