With the motorized tools – namely the Digital Motorhead and the Fluffy Optic – you can get anywhere between 40 to 45 minutes in Auto mode, depending on how often the dynamic suction comes into play. This will make vacuuming even easier because there is no need to continuously press the on/off trigger! The plastic feels flimsy, the parts aren’t easy to fit together and feel like they’ll break if I apply too much force, and the white plastic clashes really badly with the rest of the Dyson color aesthetic. It is a heavy machine, though, but is worth considering if you predominantly have hard floors at home.

You can spray clean water on the floor, or the mop head to clean it, or moisten the mop first and wring out the water before mopping the floor. It’s not often Dyson includes a free-standing dock for its cordless vacuum cleaners and they’re restricted to exclusive models only, as is the case here. Although offering sparkling hard floors following a number of swipes, the Hard impressed but did not excel in early tests. Not everyone is going to lug the drip tray around as they mop or remember to place it exactly where you finish. That sounds unlikely, if not downright impossible, but truly, the first thing I noticed after moving from vacuum mode to mopping mode by switching out the Fluffy Optic head designed for use on hard flooring for the Submarine wet roller head was how the machine glided across the floors with virtually no effort on my part.Large stains proved too demanding for single runs with the narrow vacuum channels failing to collect all dirt and dust.

I then used the Digital Motorbar and the Fluffy Optic to vacuum to determine which one does best on such debris. Similarly, thanks to the trigger mechanism and power friendly Dyson motor, the 15-minute predicted battery life, which drops to eight minutes when using the suction boosting ‘Max’ button on rear, proved more than enough for use to tackle multiple cleans. If you need to clean up breakfast cereal, for example, you can mop up the milk, but you’ll need to use the Digital Motorbar after it’s all dried up to suck up the cereal itself.Everything else is inherited from the other Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners – the HEPA filter on the top is washable, as are the rollers on the Submarine and Fluffy Optics. However, spills with smaller bits of food, like rice, can be mopped up easily by the Submarine, but you will need to give it a good wash and allow it to dry fully before using it again.

As a result of the oversaturation of the wet roller head, and the long drying time, after mopping my floors for the first time using the Submarine, there were visible streaks left behind on the floors. Seeing as how they’re made of microfiber fabric, you can also throw them in the washer when you’re done.Dyson’s been testing its products by launching them in specific markets at first before releasing them elsewhere. The Fluffy Optic – first introduced as the Laser Fluffy in the Dyson V15 Detect– has also been upgraded with an LED light instead of the laser, which offers a brighter and broader beam to illuminate more floor space. For those who are wondering, there is an opening at the center of the attachment for debris to enter the vacuum (that’s how it acts as a 2-in-1). Although designed for use primarily on hard floors, the Dyson Hard does come bundled with an additional crevice tool.

Dyson might be the most popular brand of vacuum cleaner on the market but you can get cheaper vacuum mops. During early tests, the plastic mop head felt sturdy and solid during use despite its less than robust looks. During our hands-on time with the cleaner, we put the Dyson Hard through a number of rigorous tests, tackling everything from muddy boot prints and spilt tea and coffee, to scatterings of sugar, oats and even toothpaste that had been rubbed into a tile floor. The process of removing the wet roller, dumping the dirty water and wiping dirt and debris from the extraction plate was incredibly simple and, more importantly, not gross at all.
