About this deal

Unlike his brilliant science fiction stories and his formidable volumes of non-fiction, Asimov’s dirty limericks are ineloquent, arhythmic, juvenile and tedious. King of Limericks participates in various affiliate marketing programs, which means we may get paid a small commission, at no additional cost to you, if you follow a link and make a purchase. Before, he did a quick internship at AMII and worked as a Wolt courier (in other words, before Bored Panda, he never had a real job). That is not the case with this contemporary poem by Adrienne Rich, where there is no room for misinterpretation.

But you see, the thing is, I seem to have gone and gotten myself into this really rather ridiculous habit recently of always trying to cram as many completely unnecessary additional syllables into the last line as I possibly can! But back to the sad and self-exiled Edward Lear, one of my great heroes, whose fertile imagination sprang from an overfertile mother. When she's not crafting articles, Melanie's eyes are still glued to a screen — be it binge-watching her favorite TV shows, leveling up in video games, or learning Spanish with her trusty sidekick, Duolingo. When Edward Lear published A Book of Nonsense, in 1846, the final line of his limericks usually repeated the first.

Lear was the unquiet possessor of a shameful secret (a gay sensibility) and, to him, a yet more shameful secret (epilepsy). They are mourning lost youth’s lost illusions, and with this realization the poem broadens until it encompasses all of us in our aging bodies, including one melancholic elderly poet.

False or awkward meter: Asimov was certainly educated enough to understand the correct meter of a limerick, and for the most part he gets them right.

These are usually short narratives or anecdotes crafted with the intent of amusing its audience by ending in an unexpected or humorous punchline. Granted, it’s traditional for limericks to exceed all standards of decency, but they ought to be at least as clever as they are offensive, and I don’t think that Asimov’s succeed.

Immortalia: An Anthology of American Ballads, Sailors' Songs, Cowboy Songs, College Songs, Parodies, Limericks, and Other Humorous Verses and Doggerel. The poet uses a conversational tone, turning an intimate moment into a relatable narrative, while also exploring themes of desire, passion, and the sensory experience of love.A sense of anticipation primes the reader and sets up line five for a whopping dose of irony or an orgasmic release of tension — making it an ideal format for salacious wordplay. Whoever it was who condensed it down to six words did something masterly; the little announcement speaks not merely of the heartbreak of an infant’s death but also of harrowing poverty and human resilience.
