About this deal

Black Rabbit Hall is drawing a number of comparisons with the beloved novels of Daphne Du Maurier, not least because of their shared setting in Cornwall, but also because of a more generalized exploration of the links between a specific, evocative place and (often devastating) family history. Lorna is convinced that this is the same mansion she and her mother visited together when Lorna was a child, and despite Jon pointing out the house's many leaks, crumbling plaster, and overgrown gardens, Lorna is enchanted by its romantic ambience, its beauty, and, most importantly, the fact that she feels a mysterious emotional connection to the place. Eve Chase is the internationally bestselling author of Black Rabbit Hall, The Wildling Sisters,The Daughters of Foxcote Manor and the pseudonym of journalist and novelist Polly Williams.

Alive with the magic of Amsterdam, the enchanting new historical novel from the author of the sensational New York Times bestseller The Miniaturist , which has sold more than two million copies. A deliciously intriguing novel whose rich sense of time and place bear more than a few echoes of du Maurier’s best.Ghosts are everywhere, not just the ghost of Momma in the woods, but ghosts of us too, what we used to be like in those long summers . There's something about tales of mysterious old buildings that have the ability to set hairs on end . Eve Chase drew such a vivid description of the property that I could actually feel myself within the rooms, in the forest, on the beach, etc.

It was published in early 2016, yet I hadn't heard of it until very recently - special thanks to my GR friend Frances. But this was the 60s and even though everyone in the family has been profoundly damaged by the abrupt loss of Nancy Alton they have no mechanisms to really talk about it or process it or whatever. The highly atmospheric setting immerses the reader in rainy, muddy Cornwall as the narrative drifts between musty rooms and uncurls in front of the fireplace. And I certainly don’t think that the storyline was too far-fetched or unbelievable that it was unreadable or cringe-worthy; it was no Hollywood action movie! A little bit gothic drama, a little bit historical fiction, a little bit of romance, a good bit of suspense, with wonderful characters and a fabulous decrepit mansion with a personality of its own.

And while I don’t inherently consider inspiring ANY sort of human feeling as evidence of merit, I think in this case it sort of was.
