In the chapter book My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell, Twilight has her doubts about "being in charge of the well-being of a kingdom of ponies" and seeks out advice from others. She consults Princess Cadance and asks her friends for ideas for her "future kingdom". In a September 2013 presentation held by Hasbro Australia, a slideshow was shown depicting upcoming My Little Pony and Equestria Girls merchandise. One of the slides in the slideshow relating to Rainbow Power contains the text "QUEST FOR A KINGDOM". [1]

The castle appears in Friendship is Magic, as in the second of the two episodes adapted; [1] is featured in Rainbow Dash and the Daring Do Double Dare, in which the Dual Stronghold is code for the Castle of the Two Sisters; serves as a secret meeting point of the Mane 6 in Rarity and the Curious Case of Charity; and is detailed in The Journal of the Two Sisters, including the construction of the Castle of the Two Sisters. In the dilapidated castle, Twilight and Spike find the large library of ancient books. Twilight is ecstatic to have found such a large source of untapped research material, but Spike trembles in fear as star spiders crawl around him. In the latter episode, the city briefly comes under siege by Queen Chrysalis and the changelings. Lauren Faust's inspiration for Canterlot, with its castle carved into the side of the mountain, was Minas Tirith from The Lord of the Rings.
