About this deal

The Aviation requires yet another special ingredient you might not already have: maraschino liqueur. And no, it’s not the liquid from a jar of maraschino cherries! Maraschino liqueur is a clear, cherry flavored liqueur. The flavor is mainly dry but lightly sweet, with hints of sour cherry and almond. There are several brands of maraschino liqueur: a popular one is Luxardo (which is what we found at our local liquor store). The aftertaste and finish are very gentle and floral with a delicate sweetness. It's not too heavy or oily and leaves a pleasant violet note on the palate. Overall Butterfly pea flowers give the gin it’s characteristic color, which transforms from indigo to purple or pink when acids like citrus are mixed with it. The basic recipe of every Crème de Violette liqueur is quite similar. Violet flowers, petals, and buds are steeped in a spirit base like brandy or any other neutral spirit. Added sugar lends the liqueurs its sweet taste and an ideal texture. The exact recipes vary from product to product.

After careful maceration of these native wildflowers, the liqueur is sweetened with cane sugar. This sweetener adds enough flavor to the liqueur that no additional flavorings from vanilla or fruits are needed. Here I’ve used just a quarter of an ounce of violet liqueur. This is just enough to enjoy its intense floral flavor and to add some of its inky blue-purple color to the drink. Crème de Violette is a violet flavored crème liqueur. Crème liqueurs (not to be confused with cream liqueurs, made from a base spirit, flavorings, and cream) are so named due to their high levels of sugar, which provide a texture like cream. There are many flavors of crème liqueurs, but all of them are syrupy in texture and around 30 proof. After crème de violette had been all but unavailable in the United States for decades, in mid-2007 Haus Alpenz began importing the Rothman & Winter Crème de Violette, which is made from Queen Charlotte and March violet flowers from the Alps. [1] Since then, other brands of crème de violette have arrived on the US market, e.g., The Bitter Truth from Europe. The gin choice makes a big difference,” says David Yee, assistant manager at Columbus, Ohio’s Oddfellows Liquor Bar. From juniper-heavy London Dry to light and floral New Western, all styles are welcome in this drink, but the amount being added should be adjusted accordingly.

If a drizzle of violet syrup on your cake isn’t quite enough for you, why not add a bit into the cake batter too? Whether using a box mix or your grandma’s tried and true cake recipe, add in one to two tablespoons of crème de violette to lend a hint of color and flavor. Of course, adjustments to quantity may need to be made. But once you’ve found the correct ration, it may prove more satisfying for your sweet tooth than a roll of Choward’s Violet Mints. Try with Rothman & Winter Crème de Violette. Try Your Hand at Violet TrufflesNever float the violette. That's like, the worst way to serve this drink,” says Yee. He adds that crème de violette “is not a liqueur you want to serve warm.” Violet Gin & Tonic: add 1/4 ounce (or even as little as a bar spoon) to 2 ounces of floral gin and 4-6 ounces of a premium tonic water such as Fever-Tree. I also like to add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice.

When selecting glassware, though, there’s more to consider than how the drink looks. Crème de Violette is an easy-to-drink floral liqueur that isn't overly complex.
