About this deal

Ultimately, The Bolds could benefit from some editing. At two hours the continuous stream of joke-telling becomes unfunny and, as a vehicle for young children, it’s just too long. But from the perspective of family entertainment, it does its job.

All in all, this is sure to be a really fun show for all ages - including the grown ups. If the audience's reaction from last night is anything to go by, people are going to absolutely love it. The Bolds have decided to do their bit for the planet and go green. They're reducing, reusing and recycling as much as they can. Not all of their eco-friendly ideas are welcome, though - especially when it comes to 'watering' the neighbours' front garden with wee . . . We love the Bolds and this adventure is another crazy critter caper that won't disappoint. WRD Magazine

Sheer joy radiates on The Unicorn Theatre main stage, in Julian Clary's on-stage adaptation of his well-loved book collection. Having seven in the collection, this play focuses on the first book - the story of The Bolds; a family just like the majority of us, who live in a nice house, have nice jobs and love a giggle. But there is one difference, they're hyenas. Yes, you heard it right - they've came across from Tanzania to live a life where they don't have to scrimp for the next meal. Nyt on katsokaas sillä tavalla", herra Ponnekas jatkoi, "että meidän perhe eroaa kaikista muista perheistä, kuten olette ehkä huomanneet." It’s all very jolly but the energy eventually lags. Running at two hours, Clary’s script is far too long and a bit shapeless. The songs, penned by Clary and Simon Wallace, are written in an unforgivingly low register and don’t feel entirely necessary – but are just about rescued by a delightfully daft duet in the closing stages, infused with a music-hall sense of mischief.

I did love that little girl who was friends with the kids. I was worried about how the story would go when certain things came to light, but she really surprised me. I hope she will get a bigger role in the next one. I won't tell you their secret, though I guess, you could guess from just looking at the cover. What other creature laughs so much, what other creature is so hairy with spots, what else has such big teeth and snouts? The premise is simple but strong. After Fred and Amelia Bold suffer an unfortunate accident with a crocodile during a safari in Tanzania, two enterprising hyenas spot an opportunity for a better life and pitch up in Teddington determined to nail the suburban lifestyle with their two young pups – sorry, children – who are taught from an early age never to reveal their bushy tails. Ai koska me ollaan paljon karvaisempia?" kysyi Vilma ja silitteli omaa tuuheakarvaista käsivarttaan. The Bolds are just like you and me. They live in an ordinary house on an ordinary street, and they love to laugh. But there’s one slight difference. They are actually hyenas! Julian Clary has branched out into the wondrous world of children’s fiction! My 7 year old pronounced the book as “BRILLIANT!” as a reviewer for Lovereading4kids. But what will grown ups make of it?
