About this deal

The lens ring on the TG-6 is only cosmetic and has no effect on the waterproof or dustproof ability of the camera.

My smartphone is in a drybag when I am kayaking, but the drybag plastic is a poor lens cover, even if it doesn't fog it will soften, distort and flare the image. I did buy a hard case for the phone with a decent optical port, but when I got it was so bulky and clunky. Useful accessories (sold separately) are available to utilize the built-in flash or LED illuminator of the TG-6 for shooting in Microscope mode. It revels in its seemingly nigh-indestructibility and lives up to its name. As you’d expect from the small sensor, image quality isn’t world-class and there are better options for above-ground work. That said, if you want to dominate anywhere up to 15m below the water’s surface, without spending a small fortune, the TG-6 really shines and earns its reputation. Whilst I don't have this TG6, I do have a Tough 860 and there have been a lot of comments regarding the TG6 (or any tough camera) compared to smartphones. The thing is, if I lose or break my camera (hardly likely) on abeach or up a mountain I still have my phone. If you use a smartphone for photos and lose or break it, you're stuffed. Optimized for underwater photography that uses natural light. (e.g. in swimming pools or shallow waters)it little matters what their prowess or dependability is...but . as it happens at low isos the iphone takes nice shots and has nice color too , but i will never use one as i will not switch to that platform either.... i use a camera to take my photographs , not a phone

The zoom lens in use here sports a 35mm equivalent range of a modest 25-100mm, with an impressive f/2 maximum aperture at the wide end, dropping down to a less impressive f/4.9 at maximum telephoto. Nevertheless, we do get a TruePic VIII processor, as found in Olympus’s OM-D E-M1 Mark II, and the Olympus Tough TG-6 can capture 4K video at 30fps, or shoot Full HD clips at high speed 120fps.

Intro

In normal lighting, and especially with subjects that are fairly close, the TG-6 has relatively decent image quality for its price point and sensor size. But you know it is a 1/2.3" sensor and these cameras always will be you and you haven't managed to PASS the review. Even in underwater snapshot mode you can get fairly close to small sea creatures. The white balance is automatically set to shallow depth and, as you can see it does an excellent job of reproducing the warmer colours in this anemone’s tentacles. For getting in any closer than this you’re better off using the underwater macro or microscope mode.
