About this deal

I like to say that ‘Seeing is Believing.’ Up until the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the doors to our family distillery have always been open – since the late 1970s in fact,” says Nolet, Jr. “The doors will be open again and when that happens we will continue to invite all consumers to experience for themselves all the care, attention, and expertise fully on display for everyone to see.” The Botanicals and Process of NOLET’S Gin There is a beautiful gin inside this distinct green bottle with its red wax seal. Tanqueray's crisp, dry style is the benchmark for a London dry gin without any citrus in the botanicals. It is a standard to which all other gins are compared and contrasted and also sells for a reasonable price. Fixative: The most important botanicals used to bind the flavors of the gin. Some of the most common ones include orris and angelica root. Barrel-aged gin: Relatively uncommon in the gin world, barrel-aged gins are exactly that: gins that have been aged in a barrel. It’s a slightly unusual practice, which allows the gin to soak up some of the flavors from the barrels as well as the botanicals. Barrel-aged gin has a hint of color, almost reminiscent of some lighter whiskies. Old Tom Gin: There are no set guidelines for this style of gin, but it is sometimes sweetened with a bit of sugar or other botanicals, licorice is occasionally added, and it can be barrel aged (which is another style of gin in and of itself). Current examples of Old Tom gin come from Barr Hill in Vermont, Ransom in Oregon, and Hibrimi in Iceland.

Another Joannes, representing the fourth generation, expanded the distillery next to the town's new Grain Exchange. Joannes went on to become the Mayor Schiedam at a time when it was the world 'capital of spirits' with some of its windmills, the tallest in the world, partly financed by the Nolets. Gin is made by infusing a neutral base spirit with botanicals, the most prominent of which must be juniper.Malfy offers a variety of flavors, but the clear favorite is the Gin Con Limone. The brand uses coastal-grown Amalfi lemons and Sicilian varieties in its lemon-flavored gin, promising a taste of the sunshine in every sip. From long-loved classics like Tanqueray to new-wave tipples from Terlingham, the abundance of gin brands lining the shelves makes this summer a prime time to add another bottle to your drinks trolley. Gin is set apart from other spirits in a few different ways. For a start, it’s a spirit that can’t be aged, which is why most gins are clear. Generally speaking, only Genever is barrel-aged. Jacobus cautiously expanded the distillery established by his father and ensured a reliable supply of malt by purchasing a share in a local windmill.

Build in a Burgundy glass with ice. First add a grapefruit wheel, then ice, NOLET’S Silver and ginger beer. Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Our brands

It was Jacobus' son, Joannes, who put down roots in the United States, travelling to Baltimore before the end of the 19th century. Falling in love with America he personally oversaw the construction and management of the Nolet's Baltimore distillery which opened in 1902.

The Kyoto Distillery is Japan’s first dedicated artisanal gin distillery. The region might typically be known for sake, but a rising level of interest in other spirits has kept tourists returning for the gin, too. Unlike London Dry Gin, which can be found in plenty of variations across the planet, there’s only one brand that sells Plymouth Gin. It’s aptly called the same name. Plymouth Gin differs from London Dry Gin in that it’s slightly less dry – likely due to the higher concentration of root ingredients. It has a slightly earthier flavor and comes in two core strengths – standard and Navy Strength. Up to this time the Nolet Distillery had predominantly made genever, most of which was sold in the Netherlands where it was by far the biggest selling spirit. However, Carolus took over just as a price war was starting with several of the larger producers trying to squeeze out their smaller rivals. Rather than enter this price war Carolus launched a new, premium genever with a much higher price point. Supported by retailers whose margins had also been squeezed in the price war, the new genever, Ketel 1, named after the oldest pot still, Distilleerketel #1, went from strength to strength. Popular flavours include orange, lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander and angelica root. The base spirit can be made from a number of different things, including wheat, potatoes or grapes. What does gin pair well with? By 2001, Ketel One vodka had grown to become a million case brand in America, which led the family to complement their 'conversational' marketing approach with the 'Dear Ketel One Drinker' advertising campaign. This heralded a new era for the brand. The early 1980s saw the launch of Absolut which, thanks to its iconic advertising, transformed the vodka market. As a distiller, Carolus couldn't help noticing the impact vodkas such as Absolut and Stolichnaya were having in America and the number of people who were enjoying them in Martinis. When he tried these vodkas he was convinced that he could make something better – a "softer, silky smooth vodka" without harsh peppery notes. So he set out to make a vodka particularly suited to being drunk neat in a Martini. I enjoy Nolet Silver a lot. It’s smooth, its exotic, its different. Fans of classic style juniper-forward gins may not find this gin in their liquor cabinet anytime soon, but if you’re one of the large number— and seemingly growing— who search my archive for floral gins every month. Nolet Silver is probably the best of the bunch. Aviation's choice of a rye base gives this gin a creamier mouthfeel than most gins. It is a gin that you can enjoy chilled on its own, which is great news for super dry martini fans.

Joannes started distilling as the medieval era was ending in the wake of a revolution in science, philosophy, politics and society. If you look at the list of botanicals in Bombay Sapphireyou will notice a few differences from other London dry gins. Grains of paradise, almond, and cubeb berries are not your average gin ingredients and they help this bottle stand apart from the crowd. NOLET’S Silver has also caught the attention of some of the world’s most respected folks behind the bar.

Tasting Notes

Like many other brands, Bols has expanded their genever selection. Beyond the original, you can find barrel-aged bottles, which are rested in French Limousin oak casks for 18 months. Nice, and definitely complex enough to warrant repeated sips. I’d think perhaps a couple drops of water, a little bit of it chilled, or even a touch of vermouth in a martini might reveal some of the more subtle intricacies. Once a one-bottle brand, Aviation has expanded its portfolio to include Aviation Old Tom. It's the distillery's take on an old, sweeter style of gin, but they don't add sugars or flavorings, which is customary. Instead, they rely on whiskey barrel aging to bring out an Old Tom taste and accentuate the original Aviation's natural sweetness. Vodka is by definition flavorless and odorless (although the legal definition has changed a bit recently), while gin is full of flavor from the use of botanicals.
