About this deal

Under normal conditions of use a new dressing should be applied every 3 - 7 days or when the adherent properties of the dressing are no longer sufficient. It may take from 3 months to a year or more to improve and old scar depending upon the condition of the scar tissue Wash the gel sheet daily using lukewarm soapy water, rinse well and dry by patting it with a non-fluffy towel.

Mepiform can be used as soon as the wound is completely closed. Do not use on open, infected wounds or over scabs.

Contra-indications

In an observational study undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of Mepiform on post-burn and other traumatic scars of both pediatric and adult patients (n=87) in an outpatient setting, Cain et al found that Mepiform might help to enhance patient compliance, as well as improving scar quality and patient comfort. Do not use the gel sheet on open wounds. If you develop a wound in your scar, remove the gel sheet and keep it safe until the wound is healed.

Topical silicone empirically has been shown to have a positive impact on hypertrophic and keloid scars. Mepiform ® should optimally be worn 24 hours a day. It is recommended that Mepiform is removed once a day (e.g., when showering or bathing) for inspection and washing of the skin. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform should be used for 2–6 months depending on the condition of the scar. Build up your skin tolerance. Wear the sheet for 4 hours daily for two days. Then increase to time advised by your therapist. In 2006, Meuleneire demonstrated how the early use of Mepiform prevented scarring of a severe forehead laceration in one patient . Mepiform should under normal conditions be changed every 3 – 7 days or when the adherent properties of the dressing are no longer sufficient.

Sizes

Middelkoop et al found the use of Mepiform was associated with a significant improvement in hypertrophic scars in a study involving 12 patients.

Safetac is a patented soft silicone adhesive technology. Dressings with Safetac technology are atraumatic upon removal. These dressings minimise trauma to the wound and the surrounding skin, which minimises pain to the patient. The risk of maceration is minimised by sealing the wound margins. It is not clear exactly how Silicone works on a scar. Some research suggests that the silicone creates a protective barrier over the scar which allows it to mature while helping to prevent production of excess scar tissue. The silicone layer also assists with hydration of the scar. Where can I get silicone gel sheets? Mepiform is designed for use with old and new hypertrophic scars and keloids. It may also be used on closed wounds, helping to prevent the formation of hypertrophic scars and keloids in the future. Mepiform is an effective treatment for scars caused by caesarean section.

Warnings

Mepiform ®, a soft silicone scar dressing with Safetac ®, has been evaluated in a number of studies for the treatment of hypertrophic scars:

Mepiform is a thin, discreet and flexible dressing consisting of a laminate (polyurethane and nonwoven) covered with a soft silicone gel. Mepiform is designed for the management of old and new hypertrophic scars, keloids and closed wounds which may prevent the formation of hypertrophic and keloids scars. Mepiform should optimally be worn for 24 hours a day. Remove the dressing once per day for inspection and washing of the skin. The dressing can then be reapplied. Mepiform should under normal conditions be changed every 3 - 7 days or when the adherent properties of the dressing are no longer sufficient. The Cheyne Child Development Service - School age Autism (ASD) Assessment Pathway Parent Information Safetac is a soft silicone adhesive technology. Mepiform dressings adhere gently to the skin and protect the scar tissue. The Safetac technology allows the dressing to be changed without causing pain. It can be lifted from the skin without losing its adhesive properties, allowing for reapplication if inspection is needed. Contracture scars are particularly severe and usually occur as a result of losses of large areas of skin, e.g. following burn injuries, in epidermolysis bullosa and in badly aligned surgical wounds not corresponding to Langer’s lines. These scars cause the edges of the skin to pull together, affecting the adjacent muscles and tendons, thereby restricting normal movement and resulting, in some cases, in the need for z-plasty or skin grafting. Widened scars appear when surgical wounds are stretched as a result of skin tension during the healing process. They are generally pale in colour, flat, soft and symptomless, but can be aesthetically displeasing . Topical silicone has widely been shown to have a positive impact on hypertrophic scars and keloids. Mepiform dressings should be worn for a minimum of 12 hours daily, and if possible 24 hours per day, with twice daily washing. The dressing can be reapplied. It may take from 3 months up to a year or more to improve an old scar, depending on the condition of the scar tissue. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform treatment should begin soon after surgical closure, when the incision has fully epithelialised, and be continued for at least 1 month.
