About this deal

Always attach the kill cord before starting the engine, maintain a firm grip on the helm, and adjust your seating position for clear visibility and stability. Always wear a suitable personal flotation device, and ensure all passengers and crew members understand the purpose and usage of a kill cord. Common Misconceptions and Mistakes

The kill-switch is physically mounted to the front of the outboard motor casing (shown schematically here for clarity). One wire is taken from the ignition points to a terminal of the kill-switch. The other wire is taken from the other terminal of the kill-switch to the metal casing of the outboard motor (earth). Care needs to be taken to make sure that neither of the wires can get caught up with the flywheel under all conditions. James: The most difficult aspect of the course for me was the rules of road, but John explained it really clearly to me and kept reinforcing what he was telling me when we were on the water which made things much easier to understand. Was it easier / harder to do than you may have thought? A good quality lanyard will have a string on the inside and an outer plastic coating. Cheap kill cords sometimes do not have the inner string and can therefore snap quite easily. You can tell which you have by looking at the end. If you cant see the white string in the middle of the plastic it is probably is not there. The left kill cord contains a white inner string, the right cheap one should be replaced. One final thought. If you fit a kill switch, you should also have at least one spare lanyard that lives in a known place on the boat. The main reason for this is that if the driver of the boat goes overboard (with his lanyard) then of course the engine stops as it should do, but anyone who is still on the boat will need the spare lanyard in place to re-start the engine and hopefully rescue the man overboard. Some types of locomotive are fitted with a three-position pedal, which must normally be kept in the mid position. This lessens the likelihood of accidentally defeating it, although it may still be possible to deliberately do so. Adding a vigilance function to this type of pedal results in a very safe system. However, isolation devices are still provided in case of equipment failure, so a deliberate override is still possible. These isolation devices usually have tamper-evident seals fitted for that reason.

Kill switches and kill cords are essential safety equipment for speedboats / ribs and many other types of boat. Of the 1016 responses, the over-whelming majority stated that they had never experienced a kill cord or kill switch failure. Whilst this is very good news, 33% described experiencing a failure of either the kill cord, kill switch or both. The number of failures appears high and this may have been an unintended consequence of the title of the survey. External alarm mode activates the inbuilt switch until it is manually cancelled. This allows external, high power, alarms to be connected in series.

Strategic Air Command developed a dead man's switch for its nuclear bombers, known as Special Weapons Emergency Separation System (SWESS), that ensured the nuclear payload detonated in the event of the crew becoming incapacitated through enemy action. The purpose of this device, unlike other examples mentioned above, was fail-deadly rather than fail-safe. Once armed, the system would detonate the onboard nuclear weapons if the aircraft dropped below a predetermined level, [16] typically due to being shot down.Aufranc, Jean-Luc (15 Dec 2021). "Tesla Rejected More Advanced Driver Monitoring Features on Its Cars". The Verge. I have seen a kill cord where the metal clip on the end was tightened around the plastic so tight that it had severed through three quarters of the plastic, this was new out the box and not a design/brand I have returned to. Likewise I have bought lanyards before and later discovered the split ring corroding. It goes without saying that if there is a split ring it should be stainless steel.

James: The general understanding I have gained from attending the course has given me the basic skills to drive the RIB and what to do in an emergency situation and how to avoid those situations in the first place. Will you be doing any more PB courses? The kill cord or lanyard is usually attached to the kill switch at one end, and the driver’s leg at the other end. If something goes wrong the driver is dislodged from his driving position the cord is pulled away from the kill-switch allowing the sprung switch to operate. If you are worried that you might forget to wear the kill cord, there are a number of things you can do to try and remind yourself to wear it. Alternatively the wheel, throttle or even a combination of the two could be fitted with an electrical sensor that would trigger the cut-out switch if neither one was touched for more than a few seconds. Cons: Fine for a PWC when your hand is always securely positioned in one place (i.e. wrapped around a handle bar) but much less practical if you are bouncing over waves trying to keep the throttle steady in a boat. The OLAS App allows individual relay selection for easily adjusting if the OLAS transmitter triggers the engine cut-off / relay, or only triggers the Guardian’s inbuilt MOB alarm
