Connecting to Android Auto was more reliable on the Nifty Box, but once in Android Auto, it had the same lower resolution on the high-definition display of the Pioneer compared to how it can display on other capable AI Box adapters. So in light of this, I would not recommend this adapter for Android Auto use unless your system resolution is also low. CarPlay on the other hand performed fine, and like the MMB Max, you can configure the AI Box to auto-launch into CarPlay after its initial boot sequence. I tested recording an audio message via Siri, which sounded good enough as any AI Box, and it didn’t distort or increase the volume in any way. This is an Android 10 AI Box for factory Apple CarPlay and aftermarket systems. It features 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM, a fast Qualcomm 665 CPU and an Adreno 610 GPU. There is a dual card tray for expandable SD card storage of up to 128GB, and a 4G SIM card to provide internal internet to the dongle without the need to rely on a mobile hotspot or local Wi-Fi. From here, both car platforms behaved responsively to touch input, with the usual common Wi-Fi traits of a slight 1-2 second delay in music and navigation audio, whilst Android Auto continues to use the older full-screen mode on this AI Box. The Plus runs a lightly earlier version of Android 12 than the Ultra but the experience is just the same. With a new Settings screen and pull-down menu, which are a lot cleaner and more modern than earlier Android operating systems. Other than this, that’s the only real visual difference in this new version of Android that sits underneath this clunky and rather dated-looking user interface.Yes! The latest BMWs often have all the hardware required to run wireless Apple CarPlay, and only need a software activation to start using it. The UX999 Plus comes with the usual suite of pre-installed apps, including Google Maps, Chrome and the Play Store, plus some common apps have also been pre-installed including YouTube, Waze, Disney+, HBO Max, Spotify, Netflix and VLC. Just like the Ultra, there’s a new Android 12 option to toggle system-wide dark and light modes from the app menu screen. A growing number of cars are also looking to Google for their software needs, running their cars on the new Android Automotive OS. Unlike Android Auto, which is a CarPlay-like app, Android Automotive is built into the car from day one — replacing the need for any in-house software. But what does this mean if you have an iPhone?

I then ran each one on a number of CarPlay systems to test their versatility.
