About this deal

While I prefer to use a designated head shaver like the Skull Shaver, the Arc 5 does the job very well and as mentioned, makes it easier for guys that are going on vacation that require a face and head shave to have it all from one appliance. How about the attached trimmer? The range of motion is limited in the case of the Arc 5 Pro and the 5 shaving elements, while being able to flex independently, it takes a lot of pressure to move them (you’ll never be pressing the shaving head this hard during use).

Without a doubt, it is one of the best shavers I have used and seems more powerful than any of its competitor’s shavers. Therefore, a replacement set for the Arc 5 will include the outer foil and the two removable blades. Next I had to locate documentation. Fortunately, it is easy to find documentation for WW2 radio gear because it was ubiquitous in the late 40’s through the early 70’s in amateur radio stations across the world ( here is a PDF link to the manual for all or most ARC-5 gear). A typical practice of the post-WW2 era was for the Elmer hams to gift an ARC-5 receiver to a young ham working to earn their license. With such a receiver the young ham would be able to tune in radio traffic from all over the world and practice listening to Morse code (CW) transmissions. While chronologically these would be third-generation Arc 5’s, I would rather consider them visually updated second-generation shavers (given their features and performance). If those things aren’t deal-breakers, then by all means you should get one with a cleaning station (like the ES-LV95/ES-LV97, ES-LV9Q or ES-LV9U).

SO YES.

Taiwan only has four ARC5 models – and as you alluded to, they are not the very latest iterations, which seem limited to domestic Japan. The four Taiwan models are with/without cleaning station, and corded/cordless. I returned the first one and got the only one that was available without the cleaning station: ES-LV67. Thanks to your excellent breakdown and very clear observations, I also saw no need for the cleaning station. However, there’s an important catch, which leads us to the next section. Replacement foils compatibility. Upgrading your older Arc 5

This comes with a host of advantages as the power goes directly to the blades and there’s no complex linkage involved, so fewer things that are prone to break. Part of the ARC-5 Radio Equipment Command set installation in a B-25H, showing location of command set equipment (left) and the control heads (right) that are located so as to be available to the pilot for direct radio control. The way you’ll be using the cleaning station also makes it a more suitable option than the Series 9 Pro. If you’ll clean the shaver regularly with the station (like after every shave) there won’t be a need to lubricate it manually.Aircraft Radio Corporation, along with Stromberg-Carlson, made most AN/ARC-5 units except for the Western Electric VHF units. You are eligible for an ARC until your appeal rights have finalised. If you do not exercise your right of appeal, you are not eligible for an ARC. If your application is awaiting consideration

Unsurprisingly, these changes don’t really have any noticeable effect on the shaving performance — we still have the same motor and foil/blades. I always try to push a shaver somewhat to see how they perform under more difficult conditions, and anything over 3 days of growth when shaving with the Arc 5 (as expected) meant I had to shave over the same areas too many times. Side note: if you want an Arc 5 with a metal body, the best option is currently the ES-LV9Q from the revision C. You should be able to buy one regardless of where you live. Personally, that would be annoying. What might be my next best option? Price is not really an issue given how long I’ll get to use it. In late 1943, the U.S. Navy fielded an improved and more flexible set of its ARA/ATA radios under the new Joint Army-Navy (JAN) nomenclature of AN/ARC-5. Structurally and in appearance, the AN/ARC5 series is almost identical to the former units but both receivers and transmitters are somewhat different electrically. A receiver and transmitter were added that provide four-channel crystal-controlled VHF-AM operation, along with a rarely encountered set of transmitters that provide coverage of 0.5 to 2.1MHz.For these reasons, I think the older ES-CV51 or ES-CV70 are still the ones to get if you want a highly capable travel shaver.
