All brush heads made by Oral-B feature something known as fading/indicator bristles. Blue in colour, over the 3 month period in which a brush should be used, they fade in colour to a white/translucent colour, acting as a reminder to replace the head. At the end of the day, the decision is personal and different people will have different perceptions of value. Pay a price you are happy to pay and can afford. This gives a perception of quality and an appeal that is not directed to men or women, it is a universally acceptable colour choice that will look at home in any bathroom.Battery life isn’t up there with some Sonicare models – you’re looking at a recharge roughly every three weeks – but if you want the latest and greatest toothbrush tech for less, there’s no better buy.

The crossaction brush head has 16 degree angulation of bristles which allow you to clean effectively around the gum margins. Also the brush head is small and round which allows the brush to access difficult teeth easily. It also has indicator bristles which give you an indication as to when the brush head needs changing. Smart 6 6000W is the whitening version, I would not recommend buying this one. It comes with 2 x 3D White brush heads and 1 x crossaction. Up to a point. Oral-B’s CrossAction, FlossAction, Precision Clean, Sensi and 3D White brush heads work across brushes in the Vitality, Pro, Smart and Genius lines, but iO Series brushes have their own specific Ultimate Clean and Gentle Care heads. What features are worth paying extra for? The default ‘Daily Clean’ mode is the first mode that will begin when you power on the brush and no icon is available or illuminates for this. Only when you select one of the others does this change.A visible pressure sensor is so useful on an electric toothbrush and is one of the main advantages of electric toothbrushes over manual toothbrushes. The Oral-B Smart 6 6000 has the added benefit of being able to personalise the colour based on your preference. This is done through the Oral-B App and is called a smart ring. If you have more than one Oral-B Smart 6 6000 handle this will allow you to differentiate between them. Bluetooth Connectivity and SmartCoaching The idea behind the sensor is to avoid you or me doing damage to our teeth and gums by brushing too hard, an issue which dentists see regularly. A gentle glide across the tooth surfaces is all that is needed. The power button is illuminated whilst the cleaning mode has a grey coloured arrow that points down. The brush itself features pressure sensor control to ensure you’re not going too wild on your gums and Oral-B says that the uniquely designed round brush heads remove up to 100% more plaque than traditional alternatives. As is the case with all of Oral-B’s smart toothbrushes, you’ll get the most out of the 6000N while using the Oral-B companion app. Connect the brush to your smartphone via Bluetooth and the app will provide what Oral-B describes as “Smart Coaching” to help you improve your brushing routine.

That battery lasted 67 minutes during our testing, so assuming you brush twice a day for the recommended two minutes, you should get a fortnight’s worth of use before needing to recharge it. It has five different cleaning modes, including Gum Care, Whitening and Sensitive and comes with three replacement oscillating brush heads, a handy travel case and a charging base via which you top up its lithium-ion battery. Smart Series: The Smart series builds on the Pro series with Bluetooth connectivity and basic smart features. Some models are quite old now, but still effective. Oral-B Smart 6 6000S is the sensitive version and comes with 2 x sensitive and 1 x crossaction brush head as standard. What’s more, it delivers an excellent clean, with three modes – Sensitive, Daily Clean and Whitening – that take you all the way from a softer brush that’s easy on the gums to a more intense polish that should help get rid of staining. Battery life, meanwhile, is exceptional; you’ll easily get through two weeks of brushing and probably three without a recharge. It’s the king of sensibly priced brushes and one of the easiest recommendations in the Oral-B range.
