About this deal

These are some of the prominent species of the Fir tree that you may come across. Every species will have its own distinguishing feature. Before you plant or buy a Fir tree, learn to identify it and also judge the suitability of the Fir tree based on its features. How tall does a Fir tree grow?

Unlike the needles of a pine, these tend to grow from a single origin point and are attached to small, stalk-like woody projections. The easiest way to tell the difference between spruce trees and pine trees apart is by their needles and cones. The secret to becoming the equivalent of a human dichotomous key for conifer identification isn’t much of a secret. A young pine (not a spruce!). Photo by Matt Suwak. If the tree’s getting thirsty, it tends to shed more of its inner needles than usual as a defense mechanism against further water loss. Usually, the tree will look brown on the inside, and the outer needles will look somewhat brittle – but the outer needles typically will stay green unless the tree’s totally parched (usually a container-grown Douglas fir that’s not been watered). Crown lifting: Lifting the crown by removing lower branches will allow access for mowing, mulching and enjoying the shade cast by the tree. Planting often means a) some of the roots are cut, torn or damaged b) a change in water availability c) a new soil type and pH. Landscaping projects are often undertaken in the summer – even though it’s not the best time to plant a tree unless you’re committed to a very earnest watering regime. This depends on the type of tree, but there are some general guidelines to follow. Diseased or damaged wood can be removed when first noticed, to prevent the problem spreading into healthy wood.

Leaves are spirally arranged and twisted to lie horizontally or point in all directions but mostly upwards and sideways. They grow in full sun to part shade and will tolerate full shade though their growth rate would be slowed.

The needle-like leaves of fir trees tend to be softer than pine or spruce. Unlike the clusters of pine needles on a branch, the needle-like leaves of fir tree attach individually to the branches and not in clusters or attached to small woody projections. Fir Tree Cones Identification It is popularly used as a Christmas tree because of its bright green and glossy needles. Nordmann cones are fifteen inches long and red-brown in color. The very glaucous light blue-green to grayish-green upper surface of the leaves is grooved and has bands of stomata that typically continue the length of the leaf. Its lower surface also has stomatal bands on both sides of the midrib. The bark of young fir trees is usually smooth and gray. As the tree matures the bark becomes ridged. Different Types of Fir Trees With Their Image and Common Name The growth rate largely depends on the growing conditions. Fir trees require well-drained and moist soil. The USDA zones 3 -8 are the best for it. The availability of full sunshine is also best. Otherwise, partial shade is also right. Cypress, Arborvitae, and Juniper Bald cypress The wind blows through pine needles with a characteristic and soothingly beautiful whooshing sound. Another way to distinguish fir needles from other conifers is by the 2 whitish lines on their underside. These silvery-white stomatal bands can give some fir trees a bluish, silvery appearance. This often contrasts with the deep green color of the upper side of fir tree foliage. When the needle falls off, it does not leave any woody peg-like protrusion, as in the case of a Spruce needle. Being a small tree, the 1 ½ to 2 ½” dark purple seed cones with yellow-green scales are frequently visible.

I find it wild to consider that very few of the guides I’ve examined give any attention to trees that look like they could be a pine, spruce, or fir, but are actually something else entirely. Properly balanced nourishment of the Fir tree achieves the objective of healthy growth, and it also enhances the immunity of the tree. Cherry and plum trees, which are prone to a fungal disease called silver leaf, are best pruned from April to July when fungal spores aren’t being carried on the wind, and the tree sap is rising rather than falling (which pushes out infection rather than drawing it in) This fir tree lives up to its common name of grand fir because it is one of the tallest trees in the firs ( Abies) genus. Other descriptive names of this fir include giant fir, western white fir, and great silver fir. But if you can see the top of the tree and see upright cones, you are most likely looking at a true fir tree.Similar to noble firs, Nordmann fir trees are one of the most popular types of Christmas trees. The soft fir needles stay on the shoots for a long time after the tree is cut. Another reason why these evergreens are popular at Christmas time is due to their glossy green foliage. The needles are dark green with blunted ends.
