About this deal

They're "variable" when fitting them too, some are so tight you wouldn't want to risk using them on a ride because the idea of sitting at the roadside in 5 degrees and rain attempting to get the thing off the rim is just too awful to contemplate. Off-course, what will be won in the rolling resistance department, will be lost in the aerodynamics department. Though not the winners when it comes to rolling resistance, research suggests that when combined with aerodynamics, at over 35kph,these might even be the fastest, thanks to the tread pattern playing a role. When testing the rolling resistance of bicycle tires, I always try to use tires of the same size as much as possible to make it easier to compare different brands

But the Continental was only about 1.5 watts slower than most of the other 25mm tires on a perfectly smooth drum, at a 24.5w cost at 40kph compared to most of the other fast tires that were about 23w.NOTE: As of 2021, we've improved the puncture resistance tests and now provide 'Total Puncture Score' as the main puncture resistance indicator. In theory that means sealant isn't required, but Continental recommend you use 30-60ml of sealant to protect against punctures. Everything else being equal that extra layer also means increased rolling resistance, but it seems everything else is far from equal. According to Jarno Bierman at bicyclerollingresistance.com, the tubeless GP 5000 has very low rolling resistance, second only to the Vittoria Corsa Speed Open TLR, which has thinner tread.

So how did this legendary compound come into being? At the Continental R&D labs in Korbach, our heroic team of engineers grapple with one of the fundamental problems of tire construction. Essentially, the running properties of a rubber compound of a tire are determined by three co-dependent factors: The Road Bike section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. This could also depend on your wheelwidth, my GP5000's 25mm are 28mm on my DT-Swiss wheels and only 25mm on my old Dura-Ace 24 wheels. Not that i'm saying this is always the fact (my Challenge Gravel Grinders 38mm were only 35mm). But for me Continental were always a bit wider. There are so many significant differences between the Grand Prix 5000 S TR and its TL predecessor that Continental could easily have designated the new version Grand Prix 6000. The headline changes are:

Even though the 28C GP4000S has a maximum inflation pressure of 115 psi, measurements were taken at pressures of 120, 100, 80 and 60 psi. Grand Prix 5000 AS TR is a new all-season GP5000, adding some extra protection, grip and longevity to the fast GP5000 road tyre lineup. Even though this is the heavier of the two new GP5000 tyres, it is perhaps more exciting for those who enjoy a little speed boost in everyday conditions and not while racing. Tell us what the product is for and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

The challenge is that when you make improvements in one area, there’s a performance penalty in at least one other area. A compound which offers maximum levels of grip, for example, will wear out faster and roll slower. Conversely, a compound optimized for higher speeds or greater durability has a reduced ability to grip.To read about all other test conditions and how tires are tested, please read the Rolling Resistance Test Conditions On a rough drum — which we used to emulate normal road conditions, the differences were even smaller. The Conti was measured at 32w at 40kph, dead in the center of the tires tested that ranged from 29.9w (Pro One) up to 36.1 (Clement LCV).
