In 2013 the Italian company Illva Saronno, owners of Tia Maria, took a 50% stake in Walsh Whiskey for €25 million and the company soon began construction of a new Irish distillery in Co. Carlow, which was completed in 2016. In 2019, however, the partnership was dissolved, with the Walshes keeping their brands and relinquishing their stake in the Royal Oak distillery to Saronno. Finally, the Mizunara Cask. Sadly much like Ireland's Rugby World Cup tournament this whiskey just didn't really work for me. I really struggled to get the chocolate, coconut and fruitiness that you expect to get from Mizunara Oak. Instead this just became a spice driven cask fest that dominated the spirit and detracted from the whole experience. This has been flirting with a 3, so possibly I'm mellowing in my old age. Yet again my dalliances with Travel Retail only result in disappointment. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. The Walsh’s clever twist on Irish whiskey blending was to eschew the use of grain whiskey in their creations. The Irishman whiskey began as a blend of single malt and single pot still whiskeys, and soon added small batch or single cask Irish single malts under the same brand. Writerṣ Tears” is a unique old Irish Pot still Whiskey. It is a vatting of Single Malt and Single Pot Still whiskeys. Distilled from 60% malt and 40% pot Still (No Grain). Writers Tears is triple distilled, non -peated and matured and aged in American Oak bourbon casks.
On the nose: Slightly floral but very fruity – orchard fruit abundant, apples, a hint of peach and loads of stewed pears. Vanilla, white grape too. Some spice builds with cinnamon and nutmeg along with some caramel sweetness. Writers’ Tears Double Oak, is a blend of the two premium whiskey styles aged in two types of wood – American and French Oak. It is triple-distilled, non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV. The new expression is made possible by a close collaboration between the Walsh family in Ireland’s County Carlow and the Legaret family in Cognac, France. In 2009 the Walshes expanded their brand portfolio with Writers’ Tears, another Irish whiskey blended only from single pot still and single malt Irish whiskeys. Writers’ Tears was an immediate hit with the Irish whiskey cognoscenti and the range was soon expanded to include different cask finishes and an annual Cask Strength release.
THE Walsh Whiskey WAY
Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. Rich and heavy it has layers of sweeter fruity flavors and darker malty and candy flavors and aromas that balance each other out quite well. I can’t even imagine what the Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey would be like at cask strength. I saw that they put one out so I guess I’m going to have to do some hunting. We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. Any new functionalities, tools and features shall be part of and governed by the Terms from the moment they are launched and/or available. Our journey has led us to:Walsh Whiskey has developed a range of Writers’ Tears whiskey, including four core offerings, three limited special cask finishes, and a cask strength release. The Writer’s Tears Cask Strength expression, the subject of today’s review, is a blend of Single Pot Still and Single Malt Whiskey, all triple distilled, non-chill filtered, and aged in American Oak Bourbon barrels.
As one of Walsh Whiskey’s core expressions, Writers’ Tears Double Oak is available to all markets, and will be first available in the USA, Russia, UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands & Ireland (including Dublin Airport). Build the largest manually operated distillery in Ireland, uniquely distilling all 3 styles of Irish whiskey under one roof. Malt, caramel, vanilla beans, toffee, fruit, oily spice and a bit of copper. It might be a bit limited in scope, but the richness of what’s there is quite nice. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. In the mouth: Quite a chocolate note on arrival then stone fruit. Plum, peach and then the white grape again. Some citrus zest with mild baking spice, oak tannins and a touch of cask char.
Meet the team
On the nose: A definite sandalwood note on the nose along with pine, white chocolate and caramel. Underneath this are flashes of apple and pear and eventually some citrus zest. The nose does feel rather tight and closed though. Water does improve things making the nose more overtly fruity with dry woody spice and citrus oils. Finish: Short to medium. Lingering sweetness with very little spice. Soft and delicate finish with little to no burn. A very easy drinker. Away from the writers’ enjoyment of a dram, the Irish whiskey barons were rebelling against the emergence of what they saw as inferior grain from Coffey Stills. The barons were protective of the traditions that had made their success possible and at that time, one whiskey style was held high above all others. Known as the ‘champagne of Irish whiskey’ it was a master blend of pot still and malt whiskeys, both distilled in copper pots. It was enjoyed by many of the great Irish writers of the day… of course less for its inspirational qualities than its full-bodied, flavoursome taste and creamy texture! It was said that they enjoyed it so much, that when they cried, their tears were of whiskey.
