About this deal

unit choice in the Evo 4.2. And, providing the drive units work well in themselves, what you can expect to hear from such an arrangement are apparently solid and obvious vocals from the dome, with smooth almost character-free treble from the AMT tweeter. Yes, the AMT tweeters I have heard had less of the sheen of a conventional ribbon, coming over as almost peculiarly “quiet”. I know that’s a funny way of putting it, but really good loudspeakers are drama free – they just let the music through without embellishment. With an AMT expect nothing rather than something! I feel like the EVO 4.2 dissected music for effectively breaking it down for the listener to be able to hear more deeply into the music. In contrast the Linton speakers disabled the analytical side of my audiophile brain which helped me relax into the music as a musical whole and this definitely stirs some deeper emotions and is a very foot tapping experience. Holly Cole crooned at me about her station antics in The Train Song (CD) and she loomed large: it was almost embarrassing. The 4.2s project – almost alarmingly at times.

The chassis itself, made from a multi-density wood sandwich, has been damped. The sandwich construction helps to reduce panel resonance while preventing sound leakage. Well, it gave music a strength but also a real confidence. As I say, bass didn’t dominate to any great extreme here. It never bloomed or strayed too far from where it should be but it acted like the foundation of a house. The sonic structure was given authority by the bass. Bass enabled the music to roam and venture forth with more self assurance than you might normally hear. The Evo4.2 speakers feature a weaved Kevlar woofer, for a naturally self-damped, yet lightweight material with reduced resonances. The Evo4.2 uses the larger 6.5 inch woofers, along with a 2 inch soft dome midrange driver for increased clarity. The custom designed Wharfedale computer aided optimisation technology allows for fine crossover tuning, resulting in a unified driver performance. Evo 4.2 Crossover also deserves a special mention. Using specially designed computer aided optimization technology during extensive listening tests, the technicians of Wharfedale have adjusted the separation filter so accurately that Evo 4.2 reaches a balanced integration of the driver, the woofer and the tweeter - so that the loudspeaker practically disappears and your attention is established On the music program that you own. Evo4.2 is an all-rounder and offers detail where audiophiles loved and where dynamics lovers are in the house to desire.Speakers don't just sound good with a certain form of music complete myth, yes they may react differently to different pieces due to the recordings and the simple physics of the box. Have you ever walked into a room and immediately sensed a feeling? Whether that might be an air of tension or one of joy? The room has an underlying tone. Whatever is going on in the room appears to rest upon that feeling? I’ve always found Audiolab gear to be an excellent match with Wharfedale Speakers, and to an extent, this is probably by design since China’s International Audio Group owns both brands. In some countries, they are also under the same distribution, but not in the U.S.

That said, even from my initial listening sessions, I could definitely tell this was a quiet speaker, as they “disappeared” with no problem at all. This is the hallmark of an inert cabinet. The rear view shows a curved cabinet to discourage internal standing waves, bi-wire terminals with mono Wharfedale’s Evo 4.2s are interestingly different and appealed to me. What you get here is solid presence where vocals and solo instruments have power, projection and a sense of weight. What you do not get is sharpness, or edginess: highs are there but refined. At the price these loudspeakers are different and – I feel – ridiculously good. Get a listen if you can. MEASURED PERFORMANCEI am not a speaker designer neither did I measure the speakers in a way where I can categorically say one is technically better than the other. In saying that I feel like the the Evo 4.2 is a "better technical" speaker than the Linton Heritage, in that it was more transparent, more invisible and created a sound more akin to what I am used to from other much more expensive speakers.

The EVO4 series The EVO4 series is located between the Wharfedales Award-winning Diamond 11 series and our future flagship, the Elysian speakers. This series has been developed next to the Elysian project and comes from the same extensive research and development. With characteristics that are rarely seen on products on this price, such as the significant, well-built cupboards, the beautifully curved sides and the refined driver arrangement. Switching to John Batiste and Cory Wong's extensive improvisation Meditation, where the space around the notes is almost as vital as the notes themselves, the Evos again do a wonderful job illuminating the long ambient reverb tails of guitar and piano as they wrap around each other. I started by listening to some music streamed from TIDAL, and the first thing that impressed me was the EVO4.2’s excellent focus and separation. Listening to “Joy and Pain” by MAZE, I was amazed at how the speakers just disappeared, and Frankie Beverly’s voice appeared so naturally between the speakers. From my perception, that smooth-sounding speaker is partially based on an earlier Wharfedale Evolution model, so it looks like we’ve come full circle in a sense.

R&B - low-mid tempo songs sound great, strong vocals really shine through. Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation” sounds phenomenal.

It won’t come as a surprise that relatively big speakers produce a large-scale sound with plenty of authority. We listen to Dvorak’s New World Symphony and are impressed by the Wharfedale’s dynamic reach and ability to cope with a mass of instrumentation with composure. They go loud with an ease that suggests plenty of headroom and remain organised when the recording gets demanding. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. The Wharfedale EVO4.2 bookshelf speaker is the largest bookshelf model in their EVO 4 line, which is the latest incarnation of their Evolution range. The original Evolution speakers (released in the mid-2000s) were known for engineering beyond expectation at their price, and EVO 4 continues that trend with design elements usually seen in more expensive speakers. The Evo 4.2’s bass/ midrange unit must reach up to 1.4kHz to meet the dome and it has a central parasitic dome – the chrome plated item at centre of bass unit cone– to help do this.
