About this deal

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released guidance in December 2001 on how to safely use potassium iodide. In pill or liquid form, it can help protect you during a nuclear radiation emergency. How Does Potassium Iodide Work? Hypersensitivity reactions such as swollen salivary glands, headache, bronchospasm and gastro-intestinal disturbances can be mild or severe and may be dose dependent. The other ingredients are microcrystallinecellulose, talc, macrogol 6000, colloidalanhydrous silica. occasionally hypersensitive reactions suchas a rash, swollen salivary glands, headache, wheezing or coughing, and stomach upsetmay occur.

Electrolyte and water losses should be replaced and the circulation should be maintained. Pethidine (100 mg) or morphine sulphate (10 mg) may be given for pain. A tracheostomy may become necessary. Patients undergoing thyreostatic treatment must continue with such therapy and regularly undergo medical examinations at short intervals.

Continued administration may lead to mental depression, nervousness, sexual impotence and insomnia. In children of 3 to 12 years 50% of the adult dose should be given and in children of 1 month to 3 years the dose should be 25% of the adult dose. If the release of radioactive iodine continues (> 24 hours), with repeated exposure, intake of contaminated food or drinking water and if evacuation is not possible, a repeated administration may be necessary. It is recommended to use the tablets as soon as possible and preferably within 2 hours after the expected onset of exposure. However, an administration up to 8 hours after the estimated onset of exposure is still useful. You’ll take potassium iodide before or right after you’re exposed to radioactive iodine. You could also take it 3 to 4 hours after, but it won’t be as effective.

Newborns are particularly sensitive to iodine overload, probably by an immature regulation system. For neonates who have been administered potassium iodide in the first few weeks of life TSH levels and, if necessary, T4 levels should be monitored and appropriate replacement therapy given (see also section 4.4).Only take potassium iodide if state or local health authorities suggest you do so. During an emergency, health officials will send out an announcement. Your health department will then tell you when it’s OK to take potassium iodide. They’ll also tell you when you can stop the medication. Lavage with starch mucilage or lavage with activated charcoal should be considered if there is no oesophageal damage.
