This Hoover is so light! Once I had put it together I was so surprised, this is the most lightweight vacuum I have ever used. We live in a three storey house and it’s no fun lugging a heavy vacuum up two flights of stairs so this is brilliant for us. It’s compact size also makes storing it easy too. It stands upright on it’s own, you can make it shorter to go in a cupboard or it also comes with a wall mount so you can hang it up. How does it work? On furniture (I particularly like using the dusting tool for our velvet headrest that seems to accumulate so much dust!) There are 3 long haired females living here and a cat so with my old cordless I had to clean the brush at least once a week, cutting through an impressive coating of hair. The brilliant Hoover design has meant no hair gets caught in the brush and it all goes into the dust container. The HF500 anti-twist hoover is lightweight (2.2kg or 1.7kg in handheld mode) and can be easily carried around the house. I love that the vacuum adapts to my needs. I could use it as a tall vacuum, as well as a handheld cleaning device, for the couch. I even carried it to the car park and cleaned the interior of the car. Overall, this is a brilliant vacuum cleaner that has great suction, great maneuverability and is nice and lightweight with plenty of attachment for all your vacuum cleaning needs. THE DISCOUNT Where the HOOVER HF500Anti-Twist really came in to its own for us though was the anti-twist technology. With a long haired cat and two long haired people in our house, hair wrapped around the brush was a real issue and something that has been too much for many a vacuum cleaner in the past.

The anti-hair tangling floorhead works on all floor surfaces as it has a mix of soft and hard bristles to clean all types of hard floors and carpets. Take the Cheerios on hard floor test out of the equation, however, and the rest of the results are technically perfect. There were some elements left behind on a single pass, but not enough to register more than 1g of weight on my kitchen scales. Above the buttons is a simple screen with icons showing what mode you’re in (carpet or hard-floor) and whether Turbo is engaged. The rest of the display shows the number of minutes of cleaning left on the device before the battery runs out. If the vacuum is plugged in, it will display the percentage of charge the battery has available instead.Dust and dirt gathers in all areas of the home – especially in those hard to reach places. The vacuum's floor head will always work efficiently even when dealing with long hairs in the carpet due to its Anti-Twist floorhead. This design stops hairs getting tangled up in the head. Thus, inhibiting its performance Once assembled, the product works immediately (no need to charge the battery!) and can be used in a number of places: The “Direct Impulse Motor” spins at 100,000 rpm and delivers 75AW (whatever that means). In practise the Hoover HF500 Anti-Twist is easy to use and I have been happy using it as my only vacuum cleaner since receiving it. I get carpet lines which suggests it has a good suction and the carpet and floors look free of dust and debris after use.

In terms of size, the device is fairly standard, standing upright at 260 x 210 x 1,110mm (WDH). It weighs 3.4kg: the handheld unit is around 2kg, with the floor head and wand making up the remainder. For me this is a really important feature as we have a large space and I really don’t want to have to stop to charge halfway through my vacuuming. As an experiment I charged it once and waited to see how long the battery would last. I managed to vacuum up the entire downstairs (porch, hallway, living room, dining room, kitchen, utility and shower room) three times before I needed to charge again. On another test I was also able to vacuum all three floors on one charge! Anti-Twist floor head In use, I found the battery needed recharging regularly, making the HF500 best suited to small spaces and lighter jobs. Hoover quotes the battery life at up to 45 minutes, but I assume that’s only possible with the motorised floor head switched off. With the floor head powered, I found the vacuum lasted 26 mins 10 secs – which, as you can see from the chart below, is one of the weakest battery performances you’ll find among similarly priced vacuums. At 0.7l the collection bin isn’t enormous but it’s a significantly more useful size than the 0.45l bin that comes with the Hoover HF500. This should be enough to clean a house without having to empty part way through, unless your house is particularly large or filthy. As you can see from the chart below, the Hoover HF500 more or less holds its own in terms of suction power. However, it’s worth noting that the vacuum only has two power settings, where some rivals have three. For example, the Shark IZ300UKT has a standard power setting whose suction sits between its weakest and most powerful settings, designed for everyday cleaning. The HF500 has only standard and Turbo modes, so its standard suction is only a little better than the Shark model’s lightest, most economical setting.
