About this deal

Naturally, care needs to be taken while handling tools made more than half a century ago. But in general, SX-70s should be able to handle normal operation without falling apart. Polaroid SX-70 camera bellows are made to last. Another significant point of interest is which film has the best color rendition. And here, the SX-70 wins. Just below the exposure control is the electric eye. There’s nothing you need to do with this when using the camera except to make sure your finger is not covering it. Its lens and exposure system, the heart and mind of any camera, were also engineered to be state-of-the-art. The four-element 116mm F/8 lens was made of glass and engineered for optical excellence. Images produced via this assembly were sharp, contrasty, and imbued with deep, rich color. The auto-exposure system, capable of user compensation for lighter or darker images, was accurate and responsive, and paired with a shutter capable of speeds from 1/175th of a second to more than ten seconds ensured proper exposures in all but the wildest lighting situations.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art. "Walker Evans [Abandoned House]". www.metmuseum.org . Retrieved 2019-03-29. The Polaroid 600 film captures more dynamic range than SX-70 film, despite being 2.5x stops higher ISO. You can really see it in the hair and in the areas where the shadows fall off on the model’s image above. Polaroid 600 film has a much smoother transition and does capture more shadow detail than SX-70 film is capable of.

As I said from the start, I freaking love this camera. But I think it’s incredibly important for those jumping into the Polaroid SX-70, or any Polaroid in general, to have realistic expectations of results. Instant film with classic White frame/ Format: length 3. 4” × height 4. 25”/ image area: Length 3. 1” × height 3. 1”

No other vintage or modern Polaroid camera comes close to the SX-70 or the I-2 in terms of image quality. The lenses on those do leave something to be desired compared to higher end cameras, but at least you have a split image to help with focus and also a decent amount of contrast on the screen to see whether or not it's in focus.

I’m new to the vintage instant camera scene, but I’ve already learned how easy it is to mess up a shot. INSTANT photos– Polaroid pictures are unique, no two pictures are the same, So think before you shoot. I used mine recently and was impressed with the great results. So if you need flash, that option is out there. Taken with flash Loading Film In my opinion, it’s the best Polaroid camera out there, AND it will always be a conversation piece whenever you pull one out. If you’re into aesthetics, the design of the SX-70 Land Camera truly cannot be beat. It’s the most beautiful camera out there, especially when it comes to instant cameras.

Polaroid founder Edwin H. Land was the primary driver behind the project, and many engineers and designers made key contributions. The final styling of the product involved industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss and his firm. [25] [26] [27] [28] See also [ edit ]

Using flash can also be troublesome as the MiNT Flashbar 2 isn’t powerful enough to light anything further than five metres/16’. The bokeh will become significantly less permanent with the flash but may still be noticeable at the shortest focus distance. There are several models of the Polaroid SX-70, as the camera and technology progressed through the years. Dynamic range is the place where Polaroid film struggles the most. Dynamic range is the amount of detail that a photographic medium captures in the highlights and shadows. Humans can see about 21 stops of dynamic range, top-end digital cameras capture about 16, negative film around 8-12, but Polaroid film only captures 5 or 6. The result is an exceptionally robust shell with a stunning finish. Its body image was further refined by precisely cut cow-hide leather skins, the uniformity of which another Polaroid employee told me was an obsession of Land’s (this employee’s brother owned a leather work shop and attempted to secure the contract to produce the skins, however, the inability to guarantee uniformity in a meeting with Land meant Polaroid sourced them elsewhere).
