About this deal

The maximum spread width of The Handy lawn feed spreader is around 3.6 metres, so you could quite feasibly cover a good-sized lawn without it taking all day. This would mean keeping up the walking pace though, as you probably know. The NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) ratio is 6-9-6, and the high phosphorus content is what helps this product better promote the health of germinating seeds compared to other lawn feeds. Nitrogen is responsible for leaf growth, and potassium encourages plants to grow and function correctly.

Generally, a lightweight, durable metal frame and a hopper made from plastic or lightweight steel signify a high-quality spreader. Creating the perfect lawn takes time and effort. It’s not just a case of planting grass seed and waiting for the sun and rain to do their jobs. In an earlier article I showed you how to make and level a lawn from scratch. This time I just need some grass seed down for the kids to play on as we are going to do a major landscape project and I got lazy. I’ll admit it. I sent the kids around with a bag and handfuls of grass seed. It was a washout 😀 (the UK almost always is!). The lawn is completely patchy – and in fairness, the birds got their share of my seed but it would have still been a problem. So this time, armed with more seed, and the best lawn spreader I am testing and showing you how much more accurate a lawn spreader really is as opposed to hand seeding. In fact that’s a bit misleading – my daughter is going to demonstrate for you 🙂 My daughter helping me test our EverGreen 18920 Easy Spreader Plus It’s easy to apply this Miracle-Gro lawn food. It’s a granule formula, so you don’t need to mix or dilute it first. Just add the feed to your lawn spreader or buy the product in a spreader bottle, which helps distribute the fertiliser more evenly.

Summer is the only season when fertilisers aren’t usually necessary. Your lawn should be getting plenty of sunlight, which encourages rapid enough growth without the extra fertiliser boost. The most important thing is to water your lawn during any dry spells to prevent it from drying out. The Greenkey deluxe seed and fertiliser spreader is certainly easy to use, with minimal controls and no tedious assembly required. In fact, the only controls you have to deal with are the four aperture settings which are selected using the switch on the handle with your thumb, and the crank handle on the side to operate the spreading mechanism. The Gardena features a good-sized carry handle that has two of the main controls situated on it. On top is a button you press with your thumb to open up the hole and allow the contents to flow through to the spreading mechanism, and on the front of the handle is a selector switch with four settings that controls how much fertilizer will be allowed to pass through when the thumb button is pressed.

You might be wondering just how essential a lawn feed actually is. After all, grass should get plenty of nutrients naturally from the soil, right? There are a few reasons why a lawn feed product might not work for you, including incorrect application, poor product quality, and insufficient soil pH.Apart from the spreading function, the Scotts Evergreen drop spreader is very similar in design to its sibling, with a large plastic hopper and plastic wheels mounted on a metal frame and handles. Making sure your soil’s pH levels are optimal is essential because this makes the fertiliser available to the plant. A pH of 6-7 is the slightly acidic range that grass prefers. Incorrect soil pH may affect the availability of nutrients that the grass plants can absorb, so even if you apply feed, it might not make much difference.

This is a simple but clever design feature, and the type of thing I like to see product makers trying out instead of just making carbon copies of other top-selling models. Anyone with a smaller budget who prefers to spend less upfront on a lawn feed that’s as effective as products twice its price.

People tend to go for these kinds of spreaders because they are low cost, easy to use and there is less chance of accidentally putting too much fertiliser down and killing off parts of your lawn. Coming in the form of sachets, there’s no need to measure out the powder before use, making guesswork and approximations a thing of the past. It’s easy to apply neatly and, being water soluble, there are no messy granules left on the grass either. This is something that can sometimes be disappointing with other products when they leave traces on the lawn. We’ve tried and tested a lot of lawn fertilisers, and in our opinion, this Miracle-Gro feed is one of the best-formulated feeds for Autumn. Its seaweed content provides an excellent source of organic matter, which encourages healthy root development – essential for winter survival. Plus, it’s lower in nitrate to reduce leaf growth the prepare the grass for a period of winter dormancy. While this Proctors feed won’t make your lawn any greener over winter (that’s not the point of any winter lawn feed), it’ll help your grass to grow healthy roots, extending its life, increasing efficiency of nutrient uptake, and reducing your future fertiliser use.
