Starting alphabetically, the adidas Solar Glide ST is a much softer shoe but has something in common with the GTS. Its midsole has raised edges which adidas calls ‘Solar propulsion rails’– but they serve a similar function as the GuideRail.

Now, Brooks has once again come up with an innovation in the Adrenaline GTS 19 model with the new Guard Rails Holistic Support System technology. The Asics GT-2000 7 is a recent update to the popular series. It doesn’t feature anything new, just a continuation of the old formula. Simply put, there’s a firm medial posted midsole along with a mesh and synthetic leather upper. I was a little worried after reading product info for the 19. I had just finished testing the Brooks Bedlams which have Guide Rails and they were a huge disappointment.

The same blown rubber used in Brooks’ offerings is used in the Glycerin GTS. This is a less dense and softer blown rubber compared to others. It’s interesting to note that the Guide Rails on the outer side are made of a softer foam than the arch side. This is true for the Transcend 6 as well. And this isn’t noticed unless you touch it. The foot rolls to the inside during the gait cycle so the outer Guide Rail isn’t part of the sensory experience. They are a pricey shoe – but well worth the money, as I was sat on the couch getting unfit with knee pain before I took the plunge and bought them!

The Adrenaline GTS 19 has changed so much that it might alienate runners who liked the medially-posted Adrenaline. Otherwise, the ride is very comfortable – the cushioned midsole resembles that of the Ghost, just without the Guide Rails.

The RW Takeaway: Lace up in the responsive and generously cushioned Glycerin 19 and Glycerin GTS 19 for all kinds of runs. Their luscious feel didn’t weigh us down as we pushed the pace during training. If the Glycerin GTS 19 is an indicator of what’s to come, it is only going to strengthen that loyalty.

The front and mid-upper section are very comfortable and very spacious. This extra space has caused some runners to complain about their feet not being held as tight as they think it should be. Consider coming into a store and doing a video gait analysis. Gait analysis monitors your body’s movement and your feet (sports biomechanics) whilst running. It’s commonly used to help athletes run more efficiently and to identify movement related problems for people with injuries who are seeking new running shoes. The gusseted tongue (attached to the midsole) aids this fit as well, making it almost a glove like feel. This increases the temperature in the upper.Guide Rails are best compared to bowling with bumpers. They are there to not land a gutter ball – but the ball (or in this case your foot) can move freely without them. The heel fit is important in the stability trainer because it can either add or subtract an amount of the stability felt. The Glycerin GTS 19 heel fit adds to the stability. I have never run in either a Glycerin or Transcend in all my years of running. So, I put them on for the first time expecting to have it feel similar to the Adrenaline. The outsole hasn’t changed a lot. Only the midfoot has its half-shank replaced by a foam pod; the rest of the outsole feels the same. The blown rubber forefoot provides good traction and helps with the cushioning too. This has been the case for my Brooks experiences. Once they are broken in they were a dream to run in.
