Band History – The first album (1993–1994)". Bigbigtrain.com. Archived from the original on 2 May 2014 . Retrieved 16 April 2016. Ingenious Devices consists of new versions of East Coast Racer, Brooklands and Voyager, which feature an elite 17-piece string section recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. Upon learning the concept of the album and without listening yet, I was sceptical of whether we really needed updated versions of the selected beloved Big Big Train epics. The ingenious part about Ingenious Devices is that they pulled off that vision for it perfectly and upon listening, it made me love the songs even more. Starting with East Coast Racer , immediately I noticed the presence of the instruments in the mix is much more upfront and full than the original starting right off with the opening solo piano motif. As the full band enters with the first high-energy introduction it hits hard and grabs your attention even more than its predecessor. namely "East Coast Racer", "Brooklands" and Voyager" (which in total is more than 40 minutes of music), including a English boys wondering how to play our old songs". With all that has been happening inside the band recently, it seems like a worthwhile project to fill a gap before new music emerges, but is there enough on this release to satisfy the BBT Passengers and the wider prog community? The ending of the song now more closely resembles the ending created for the live performances. The piano remains prominent, but there are a few added flourishes of the cymbals and the final notes are punctuated by the 17-piece string section and a prolonged electric guitar note. It's a far more satisfying ending than the original recording, which simply fades out (as an aside, the fade out really needs to disappear forever from recorded music). The reimagined arrangement of “Atlantic Cable” greatly benefits from the addition of strings. Delicate piano melodies intermingle with keys reminiscent of Yes, culminating in a memorable crescendo of guitar.

following his death was going to somewhat special. Yes, I know 'Welcome to the Planet' was released at the beginning Some of the new songs were debuted live at The Astoria, London, the only live show the band performed during this period. English Boy Wonders was finally released in autumn 1997, although to a much less positive reaction than Age of Steam. At this stage, after a less than pleasurable recording experience, a poorly received second album, and with a record label which had stopped returning calls, it appeared that the band had run its course.

[35] Overall, as a gap-filler, this project has been a worthwhile exercise and it has been executed with the usual expertise in production that we have become used to from Big Big Train, but I will be much more excited when new the band’s next set of new music comes around.Sold out gigs and new band members – third gig added". Bigbigtrain.com. 21 October 2014. Archived from the original on 5 November 2014 . Retrieved 16 April 2016. The album closes with a live version of Atlantic Cable, recorded at the Friars Aylesbury show in September 2022. While this isn't part of the "mankind and machine" trilogy, it certainly fits in that vein, as the song is about the laying of the first telegram cable connecting North America with Europe: "the continents are joined together again with the thrill of the line."
