Located on a prominent corner of the campus, the PAW Centre is a gateway showpiece for the university. In addition to the new building, existing buildings were renovated to accommodate new program space. The new and old buildings are connected by an atrium-like Social Street, incorporating student services to activate and energize a pedestrian thoroughfare that will serve as a major access point to the campus. The project began with demolition in November 2012, which took six months to complete. The new facility was handed over to the University of Alberta in multiple phases. North Concourse on September 1, 2014, the Hanson Fitness and Lifestyle Centre on November 25, 2014 and the Wilson Climbing Centre on January 5, 2015. Animal Care Staff are spending a lot less time on cleaning and more productive time training the dogs who have responded well. All bar one of the 12 dogs in the pilot were happy to eat out of Kongs and the one that couldn’t was an elderly dog with hardly any teeth!We have now found other alternative feeders that are easier for elderly dogs to use but still provide mental stimulation. Because it can be expensive to get animals ready for the UK, we try and only prepare our animals for UK travel once someone falls in love with them.
