Bold by nature, Feragaia is an alcohol-free spirit made from land and sea botanicals. True to its name, meaning ‘Wild Earth’, it is a product of windswept coastlines, open country and creative minds.
Feragaia has a work from home policy to encourage all employees to apply environmentally conscious decisions in the virtual office. Feragaia met the buyer from Harrods while exhibiting at Scotland’s Speciality Food Show in Glasgow in January. I can’t quite believe we launched a year ago and have endured the worst pandemic of recent years, but we’ve had this success. The company recently completed construction of what it claims is the first working alcohol-free distillery in Scotland. A handcrafted, small batch, alcohol-free spirit distilled from 14 land and sea botanicals in a pot still. Modern life requires speed, we believe in taking time. That is why Feragaia’s process takes over two months from land & sea to your glass. Time optimises the extraction of natural flavours, which are then hand blended, cut with Scottish water and rested to achieve Feragaia’s characterful depth of flavour. At 0.0% ABV – Feragaia does not compromise and use alcohol in its process. Pioneers of a new era of alcohol-free Scottish distillation – It is a true alcohol-free spirit. Feragaia has zero sugar, and is vegan and gluten-free.We minimise the use of high emission vehicles in favour of cleaner, environmental and delivery. Our impact is low currently, but as we grow, clean logistics will be a key area for us live up to our commitment. JW: There are always big ambitious targets bumping around in my mind, ones that I know are unlikely to come off in the way I envisage them. However, they normally end up somewhere, and that’s progress for me. Our mission is all about reconnecting drinkers to Wild Earth (Feragaia’s translation) within themselves and each other. Our social and environmental policy is a huge factor in our decision-making process and is seen as integral to the long-term viability of our business. As part of our environmental ambitions and sustainable development, we are using the B Corp process to implement the foundations of an Environmental Management system, of which we will build on annually. We have invested in seaweed lines that grow our botanicals and also educates people and helps them to take steps to help reverse climate change. Another such orgnaisation is Seawilding. Ann Camus, enterprise and business development manager at Fife Council, said: “Feragaia is a fantastic example of a start-up business that has benefited enormously from our trade development programme. JW: Because we developed our taste and process that never touches alcohol – it was not straightforward. There was no textbook or existing product to take pointers from. We were on our own, and it was a bit of a nightmare creating the drink.Pioneering alcohol-free distillation, unlike most alcohol-free drinks we don’t use alcohol in the process. Our distillery made spirit is 0.0% as we believe this to be important if we want to achieve authenticity, transparency and premium.
This set our course to raise some funding, develop the liquid and the brand and Feragaia’s launch in late 2019. Choosing suppliers on shared values around the best environmental practices and ethical standards which we review through our supplier survey. As we are still a small business it is not currently feasible - but a goal we would like to work towards is making sure our supply chain is held accountable.These delicate flavours of flowers and leaves combine with the earthier notes of root botanicals and spices to create a complex and layered drink. Furthermore, the bottle’s format has increased from 500ml to 750ml. It is also made from 100% recycled glass, reflecting the company’s B Corp accreditation. Encourage sustainable practices internally and externally. We require suppliers to fill out our social and environmental questionnaire and review and update our policies.
