I know I do not fall within the target age demographics, but I do enjoy an exciting tale of adventure, action and good people battling bad. Something John Flanagan does very well indeed. In the Stern Chase, it is revealed that, shortly after the Temujai invasion, Ingvar proposed to Lydia. Lydia, who's feelings towards Hal and Stig were more sisterly that romantically now, agreed and the two shyly announced their engagement to the startled and delighted community of Hallasholm, Stig and Hal among them. Yet that doesn't mean they don't have skills. And courage - which they will need every ounce of to do battle at sea against the other bands, the Wolves and the Sharks, in the ultimate race. The icy waters make for a treacherous playing field... especially when not everyone thinks of it as playing. It was too rushed. The villain wasn't really developed, so I didn't really care all that much when he got defeated. Would've possibly have been better as a two-parter where the stakes could've been raised more.

Obviously, I thought it was good, even if it is less exciting than previous stories in the series. It’s taking Hal’s abilities for granted, showing off how well-practiced are the crew. But it does demonstrate that Hal isn’t always perfect, but very willing to think again. I did laugh several times in this book, as with prior books. The scene with the “best men” at the wedding was adorable.

The term for a friend with whom someone shares a BrotherBand is simply Brother, regardless of the Brother's gender. the banter seemed to be missing, especially the banter between Thorn and Lydia. Most of the time, the characters were just there.

While there are no BrotherBands in Lan's time period as they have not been invented yet, Geo gives Lan a memento in the form of a Program and Battle Chip to symbolize a "physical" bond of friendship across time. It is unknown if this interaction directly provides any influence for Lan to invent the BrotherBand. If you’ve read and liked Ranger’s Apprentice, you will enjoy Brotherband Chronicles. The focus on the building of a group and need to work together is something new and different in Flanagan’s world and it works quite well. He is an accomplished writer who knows how to pace a book and use humour. Overall a good and simple read. an island where the crew meets Kostas, a fisherman. Like I said, I get that it is MG fantasy fiction like saying that an entire nation based off the Mongol Empire can move around in ‘thousands’ of tents even seem a bit far fetched for that. Yes tribal migrations happened but there are more than just soldiers, like if there are thousands of warriors, then where are the children and the small percentage of the elderly. For me, and again, it’s just my own opinion, but I like a bit more realism than that.

Forming BrotherBands in this game will increase a player's Link Power, which in turn can be used to equip several Ability Waves. In-game Brothers can grant you up to 100 Link Power each, while real-life Brothers grant up to 150 Link Power, depending on how much of the game the person has finished. Forming Brothers across different versions are important so as to be able to use the advantages granted by Double Tribes and Tribe King. When a player gains a real-life Brother, he also has the option of forming a BrotherBand with that Brother's in-game Auto Brother. The author delivers explanations numerous times throughout the book. I surmise these tidbits of information are for the youth that are the targeted age for Brotherband, but it is unnecessary information that detracts from the story, no matter the age of the reader:
