About this deal

Isabel Allende tells herself without shame. Yet, I wonder how all the people she mentions could have received these indiscreet descriptions. All the characters here are brilliantly painted by Doyle. This is a story of hope and redemption. We get the feeling that Paula will prevail despite her horrendous past of being brutalised and humiliated. Isabel Allende has mesmerized readers throughout the world with her own blend of magical realism, politics, and romance. With Paula Allende has written a tour de force, a powerful autobiography whose straightforward acceptance of the magical and spiritual worlds will remind readers of her first book, The House of the Spirits.

I loved the characters in this book. There were some pretty big developments for Xanthe in her personal life in this story and I loved seeing how supportive everyone in her life turned out to be. I found the characters in the past to be just as likable and I found myself hoping that Xanthe would be able to help their situation. I loved getting to know Xanthe better as she learned more about her abilities.

Publication Order of Paula Standalone Novels

This is an amazing read. I thought it was even better than The Woman Who Walked Into Doors. Paula is a brilliant character. There are no holds barred about her frailties and her issues. She’s nearly 48 and is an alcoholic who is on the dry. Leanne, her daughter, daughter of an alcoholic, is a sad and damaged character who is becoming an alcoholic herself. Leanne has few friends, and suffers from terrible excema. There is a lot of tension between Paula and Leanne that’s very well depicted by Doyle.

even though I was moved by Allende's intense love and heart-wrenching goodbye to her daughter, Paula's husband, Ernesto's grief was palpably heartbreaking for me.The Sadness That springs from the love that Ernesto had for his wife Paula, who he lost before even being with her for a full year... Beautiful Writing – Debut author Paula Saunders truly has a way with words. Her phrasing often came across as lyrical even in the midst of a gritty story; plus, her use of similes was textbook perfect. Parineeti Chopra to star in official Hindi remake of 'The Girl On The Train' ". The Week. 24 April 2019 . Retrieved 6 August 2019. I am a huge fan of Roddy Doyle and ‘The Woman Who Walked into Doors’ so I couldn’t wait to get hold of its sequel ‘Paula Spencer’. To say I was disappointed would be a huge understatement. Daly writes compelling unputdownable novels that make it so easy to get caught up in the lives of her characters. Reading the stories in the novels, one cannot help but want to know how it is all going to end. Paula Daly has an excellent eye for the intricate character foibles and details and has a way of describing the setting which makes for a very authentic sense of place. For instance, her Lake District setting is a vivid one that is brought to life with grace and beauty. She makes her settings so great one wants to go live in them only that there is now fair reason to look at the neighbors with suspicion. Daly often messes with her characters and puts hurdles in their path that makes the story even more interesting. Her stories are always funny, fascinating and come with a dark undertones. However, the best thing about them is that they are unpredictable though they are grounded in a reality in which anything could happen.

Listen to Paula Hawkins on the Penguin Podcast

She recalls one critic saying of the book, “she should have just written The Girl on the Train 2, no one would’ve judged her for doing that.” She bursts out laughing. “And I was thinking ‘Yes they bloody would’ve done!’ And I didn’t want to anyway; I wasn’t interested in writing the same book again. I thought what I was doing was quite ambitious.” Into the Water is told from the perspective of 11 characters, “and OK, some people felt it didn’t work. But I’d rather be ambitious and fail than just do the same thing over and over. And how do you even do that? What are you going to do – is Rachel going to go into solving crimes? Develop a detective agency? It makes no sense to me.” I do not want to remain trapped in my body. Freed from it, I will be closer to those I love. Please don't be sad, I am still with you, except I am closer than I was before. In another time, we will be reunited in spirit. ... Remember that we spirits can best help, accompany, and protect, those who are happy ... References [ edit ] Uncomfortable Attitudes – This isn’t exactly something that didn’t work, in fact it was key to the story, but it made me uncomfortable and may be a trigger to some. A factor of the times, both Al and Eve had very harsh things to say about their Native American neighbors. Prejudice wrapped in fiction doesn’t typically bother me, but here I squirmed. Note: I received a copy of this book from Random House (via NetGalley) in exchange for my honest review. Many thanks! It's almost a line by line conversation (real or imagined) that shows exactly what an abused person and an addict thinks and feels on their journey to recovery. The confusion, the constant and violent swings between yes-no, right-wrong, do-don't, can-can't, will-won't, the relentless task of trying to convince yourself everything will be grand when you're feeling the lowest of the low.

The Distance Home”, by Paula Saunders, took me to a place and time I haven’t been exposed to often in novels; the sparse, wind-swept plains of the Dakotas just after WWII to the present. And it took me into the world of dance. But it also took me inside a highly dysfunctional marriage at a transitional time for gender roles (the 1950s) and a transitional time for American culture (the 1960s). It's about being careful. She has to be careful. For the rest of her life. It's killing her. She can feel it. Every word, every little decision. Chipping away. She wanted to put her head on the table here. She wanted to give up.'The novel follows their abusive childhoods through René's narrative. Occasionally inserted in the story is information from future discussions shared between Leon and Rene as adults. They provide a glimpse into the fallout from their childhood and the destruction that resulted. Families are complicated organisms and Saunders clearly captures this in The Distance Home. It has been said that the novel draws on Saunders's own family history, which makes perfect sense because the turmoil, emotions, and the prevailing attitudes of that period in American history is captured so completely. The Distance Home by Paula Saunders is a very highly recommended family drama which is beautifully written while brilliantly depicting a highly dysfunctional post World War II family living in West River South Dakota. What could be more complicated than watching our daughter die? The insane hope of recovery than the long accompaniment until the end?
