The writing on here is a fantastic blend of sensuality, introspectiveness, and humor. You get songs like "Orange Moon" and "In Love With You" that see Erykah create some extremely romantic songs, with a great use of metaphors in the case of "Orange Moon", which are only further helped by Erykah's beautiful vocals. You get songs like "Cleva" and "Penitentiary Philosophy" that see Erykah try and fight all the negatives of the world, whether that be society pushing someone to snap thanks to the evils of the world, or trying to combat the standards around something like someone's attire. And you also have songs like "Bag Lady" and the ten minute album closer "Green Eyes" that deal with trying to move on from a certain point in life, whether that involves a breakup or your past and the demons that haunt it. Aside from periodic collaborations and other one-off projects, Badu has been relatively removed from the industry over the last few years. While there is recognizable personnel and a distinguishable sound throughout a lot of his work, Billy Idol has always pushed himself to try different things. Idol discusses his musical journey, his desire to constantly move forward, and the strong connection that he shares with Stevens.
