Aside from the size, there are generally three types of camping tents: three-season, three or four-season, and four-season tents. Three-season tents are cooling, lightweight, and act as a shelter in the spring, summer, or fall with mesh vents for easy, breezy airflow. Three-to-four or four-season tents are a lot more heavy-duty, built to withstand heavy rain and snowfall, and are made with heartier materials and more poles than your standard three-season tent. The grade goes up to five and beyond for more professional outdoor enthusiasts. Some models even include an on board washroom, incorporating electric flush cassette toilet and hand basin. The sleeping areas normally fold out either side of the trailer, which can then give a row of seats on each side, and room for a central table. Extra storage or sleeping accommodation can often be provided by a tent that fits under the bed extensions. A trailer tent has a trailer body with a lid which either folds out like a pram hood to form the floor, or folds out like two flaps of a box top to provide raised sleeping platforms. The sides are flexible, and are generally made of canvas or a man-made equivalent. The Night Owl’s weight is middle-of-the-road and is probably not light or compact enough for the truly hardcore gram counters, but at just over 5 pounds, it’s not outrageous to hike with for several miles. As a reward for going a little heavier, you get super durable materials and a robust design. If you are traveling alone and you need to save every gram, then the lightest options are a bivi bag, a half-tent or a one person tent.
Depending on the number of people planning on using the beach tent, you will have to go for either a small-ish or a big-ger shelter. While the compact size works for couples with no children, it most certainly won’t work for a family with 2 kids and 3 pets. Most trailer tents weigh comfortably less than these limits, so there is no requirement for brakes, which makes maintenance easier and cheaper. The 15D nylon is very light, and because of that and its somewhat irregular shape, we wouldn't set it up without Sea to Summit's custom footprint, which isn't included.
