About this deal

Highlight Tone Priority is a custom function which can be enabled from the menu. Use of this custom function improves highlight detail by expanding the camera's dynamic range in the highlights. As you can see from these examples, Highlight Tone Priority reduced the extent of highlight blow-out considerably. Enjoy high quality performance, low cost prints and ultimate convenience with the PIXMA G series of refillable ink tank printers. You'll also need to buy a memory card and a case or bag to keep your camera safe and protected - have a look at our complete guide to camera bags. The flash settings on the EOS 100D are Auto, Manual Flash On/Off, and Red-Eye Reduction. These shots of a white coloured wall were taken at a distance of 1m. While the 100D's LP-E12 rechargeable lithium ion battery performance isn't quite as grand as that of its bigger brother the 700D at 440 shots, the 100D offers up a maximum 380 pictures if operating at room temperature. We were away with the camera for two weeks, using it more or less every day but only had to recharge it twice, with a separate mains charger provided for the purpose.

In brighter daylight conditions the 100D excels, the 18 megapixel sensor and lens combination capturing plenty of detail that results in images which clearly look a cut above what could be achieved with a humble fixed lens compact. Yes, there is the occasional loss of highlight detail in strong sun, but as we say this is only occasionally the case. All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 18 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6Mb. Yes Single shooting, Continuous shooting, Silent single shooting, Silent continuous shooting, Self-timer with 10-sec. or 2-sec. delay and 10-sec. delay with continuous shootingFor instance, the Canon EOS 100D sensor is the same resolution as the EOS 700D, although the 18MP APS-C Hybrid AF II CMOS sensor is smaller and thinner sensor to help make the 100D smaller than typical DSLRs. The new EOS 100D / Digital Rebel SL1 is the smallest DSLR camera that Canon have ever made. Measuring 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4mm and weighing just 407g, it sits between the EOS M compact system camera and the EOS 700D in both size and price. Despite its tiny dimensions, the control layout will be instantly familiar to anyone who's used a mid-range Canon DSLR before, commendably offering most of the external controls that the previous generation EOS 650D offered. Image: Colours produced by the Canon EOS 100D are excellent, and I particularly enjoyed using the monochrome setting with the red filter effect Canon EOS 100D review – Autofocus

With a variation on the 18-million-pixel sensor that has been used in a number of Canon EOS cameras, there was nothing too surprising about the images produced by the EOS 100D.Handling - The Canon EOS 100D is noticeably smaller than other Digital SLRs, and has a large rubber grip that also surrounds the shutter release button to make sure it's possible to get a good hold of the camera. We found the grip quite deep, and combined with the new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens the camera didn't feel too small in hand. Overall, the build quality of Canon EOS 100D DSLR camera can be said to be very good as it is sturdy and robust despite boasting a compact body. In other words, you can take comfort in the fact that this Cano DSLR camera can withstand harsher punishment as well as being less prone in getting damaged easily. In addition, the rubberized elements around this Canon camera make it feels right on your hands. In fact, you will feel comfortable when holding it. Responsive To Your Creative Needs Image: The highlight details in the clouds look lost in the JPEG image, but are easily recovered from the raw file Canon EOS 100D review – Dynamic range

For a DSLR that is so small, the optical viewfinder seems surprisingly large. As we would expect for a camera at this level, it doesn’t offer 100% field of view, but the 95% coverage is reasonable, as is the 0.87x magnification. The viewfinder is also bright and clear. Although the Canon EOS 100D’s 63-segment evaluative metering appears underwhelming compared to the 425-pixel RGB metering sensor of the Nikon D3200, it is in no way a compromise. Using the evaluative metering mode when shooting landscapes in bright sunlight, the Canon EOS 100D produced nice bright images. True, some highlight detail was blown out in images of bright clouds saved as JPEG files, but all this lost detail could be recovered in raw images.Nevertheless, for most situations in which photographers will want to use live view – for landscapes, still lifes and macro shots – it will be fast enough and I certainly wouldn’t let it be a deal breaker when deciding whether to buy the camera. Canon EOS 100D review – Noise, resolution and sensitivity Shooting modes include Auto, intelligent Auto, as well as full manual shooting, along with new candle-light, food and kids modes. It's possible to shoot creative effects with a preview showing the effect before taking the shot, and new to the EOS 100D is the ability to record two versions of the photo, one with the effect applied and one without, both as JPEG files, so that beginners don't need to resort to the RAW file if they don't like the effect, or left the effect on by mistake. As discussed in the Metering section, there seems to be sufficient headroom in the highlight areas to overexpose slightly from the nominal meter reading and recover some highlight detail that otherwise appears blown out. Another selling point of the Canon EOS 100D over CSCs is that it adopts Canon’s EF-S lens mount, meaning it can be used with both EF and EF-S lenses that you might already own if you’re a seasoned Canon owner. The Canon EOS 100D is a new mini-DSLR from Canon, designed to fit between the Canon EOS 600D and Canon EOS 700D, as smaller option for those looking for a Digital SLR. Featuring a similar specification to the Canon EOS 650D, with an 18 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, Hybrid AF focus, full HD video and 4fps continuous shooting, the camera is 25% smaller, and 28% lighter than the 650D, with every component made smaller. Canon EOS 100D Features

Generally, the sensor captures a good amount of detail, though as we’ve noted numerous times with Canon cameras, there can be quite a big difference between the detail that can be resolved in raw files and that which is present in JPEGs produced in-camera. A slight tweak to the local contrast and sharpening settings really brings out the finer details in images, which can otherwise be lost in JPEGs. Essentially a more extreme version of the well-established Picture Styles, Creative Auto offers nine options including Standard, Vivid, Soft, Warm, Intense, Cool, Brighter, Darker and Monochrome, all of which can be interactively tweaked to suit your taste. Standard x 2912, 4608 x 3456,3456 x 3456, 3456 x 2304, 3456 x 1944, 3072 x 2304, 2592 x 1728, 2592 x 1456, 2304 x 1728, 2304 x 2304, 1920 x 1280, 1920 x 1080, 1728 x 1728, 1696 x 1280, 1280 x 1280, 720 x 480, 720 x 400, 640 x 480, 480 x 480 However, if you have an investment in Canon lenses, want as small a body as possible, and prefer an optical viewfinder, then the Canon EOS 100D delivers excellent images, is well built with good handling, despite the small size. For many having a true DSLR that is as small as possible will appeal, and the Canon EOS 100D certainly doesn’t disappoint, although there are a few negatives due to the small size, namely the shorter battery life, slower continuous shooting (compared to the 650D/ 700D), and slightly fewer features and buttons. We would also recommend trying the camera in person, as you may prefer a bigger camera, if you have larger hands. Max duration 29min 59sec, Max file size 4GB (If file size exceeds 4GB a new file will be created automatically)

Specifications

The out-of-camera JPEGs are quite soft and at the default sharpening setting and benefit from some further sharpening in a program like Adobe Photoshop. You can also change the in-camera sharpening level to suit your tastes via the Picture Style options. Despite the small size, I found that the Canon EOS 100D handled well. As with compact system cameras, the buttons have all been strategically placed to maximise their number while ensuring ease of use. Also, the handgrip has not been compromised, being almost as large as would be found on the other cameras in the EOS range.
