About this deal

Since thru-axles have to accommodate both the dropout and the hub width, some bike manufacturers have introduced their own axle sizes to fit their frames and forks. Logically, you would think that if you buy a bike from a company that makes their own axles, you need to buy your axles from that brand, right? Roller Bearings – A bearing collar containing needle roller bearings, often the most common and well used bearings. Most suitable for medium duty applications, making the wheel easier to move. The side of the bolt head that presses against the dropout is either flat or conical. The conical standard is also called “X-12 cone.” Thru-axles often have a lever built into them, which gives you tool-free removal if you need to fix a flat or swap a wheel. In some cases, the lever may be removable so you only need one for the pair of wheels – DT Swiss uses this system.

Not really. Most brands that offer bikes that use proprietary axles also sell bikes that use standards like Boost. There are also proprietary axles that work in several brands of bikes, because these companies work with the same component suppliers. For example, some Scott and Santa Cruz bikes use proprietary 168mm length rear axles with a 12 mm thread length and 1 mm thread pitch. However, other bikes in these company’s lineups use SRAM’s Maxle Stealth. Scott and Santa Cruz are not related in any way, they just happen to build bikes that use the same unique axle size. There are aftermarket manufacturers that make axles in proprietary sizes, so you don’t have to buy a replacement from the bike manufacturer. At least you shouldn’t, unless you have a high-end road bike.

With this you are done. The typical lifespan for a new hub assembly is about 100,000 miles, so enjoy the drive until the next maintenance project. This job could have cost you a lot more at a professional shop, but since you did it yourself, you can afford the gas for a road trip. You've definitely earned it! Look for thesymbol. Weight bearing abilities can be affected by floor surfaces and amount of use overtime. Overloading wheels will cause them to fail! There is no universal kit that lets you convert any bike to use thru-axles, or switch between axle sizes. You’ll need to do some research to find out if there’s a solution that works with your bike. High Temperature Wheels – we offer a range of hard tread phenolic resin temperature resistant wheels along with a soft tread high temperature rubber wheels.

At this point, the noise should be gone unless your axle and hub splines are very worn or you have a different issue. Volvo issued many service bulletins focused on odd noises occurring on P2 XC90 (2003-2014) models, but these same issues can occur on any Volvo with CV joints (FWD/AWD.) It appears to be most common on XC90, S60R and V70R models.

But things like dropout design, thread pitch and the overall length of the axle differ between makes, even with the same axle spacing, so thru-axles are not always cross-compatible between brands. Axle “Ping” is a phrase used to describe a variety of noises that can occur from the front of 1999 and newer Volvos.

We can offer you wheelbarrow wheels and trolley wheels with or without bearings, with plastic wheel centres or metal, and even a range of puncture proof wheels to suit your requirements. Although the almost-standardisation of 12 x 100mm front/12 x 142mm rear thru-axles on road bikes sounds great, it’s not all plain sailing and there are plenty of compatibility issues with road bike thru-axles. How do you get the correct axle tightness and get the handle in a safe location? Some manufacturers use a splined axle end with a matching handle. Pull the handle out slightly, and you can spin it around without moving the axle. This way, you position the lever so it folds down where you want it. There are also attachment systems like the QR-15 that use a captive nut that fits into the dropout in several orientations. Rotating this nut changes where the axle bottoms out. Get the nut in the right position, and the axle will always tighten in a place that leaves the lever in a safe position. After installing the hub, reattach the axle, tightening the six differential bolts in a star pattern. After this, reinstall the dust shield, brake rotor, and brake caliper. Figure 5. A reassembled brake assembly with aftermarket rotors. Your brakes probably won't look like this. Step 6 – Tighten the center axle bolt and reattach the wheels A fixed thru-axle lever gives the rider the leverage they need to tighten and loosen the axle by hand. In other cases, you need to use an Allen key or multi-tool to remove the wheel because there’s no lever on the axle. It leads to a cleaner look and less wind resistance, but does mean you need to carry a tool with you on a ride. Road Boost

Selecting the correct size thru axle for your bike is as you can imagine, unfortunately, rather complicated. Even after having read through this article, do you know the length, diameter, and thread count of your current axle? Soft Tread Wheels – such as Solid Rubber Wheels, Pneumatic Rubber Wheels, High Temperature Rubber Wheels and Polyurethane Wheels. Soft Tread Wheels are generally kinder to the floor surfaces, make less noise and some are even non marking rubber wheels. Polyurethane wheels tend to sit in-between the two types of wheels, as they have a hard nylon, cast iron or aluminium centre with a softer polyurethane tyre bonded on. This makes the polyurethane wheels some of the most versatile wheels in the range. You can install a thru-axle compatible fork on any bike, and pair it with a thru-axle front wheel. Some forks that have replaceable dropout cups, letting you swap in a pair of thru-axle compatible cups to fit a thru-axle wheel. This option is usually limited to high end carbon fiber road forks. If you have mountain bike forks that already support thru-axles, there may be kits available to switch the cups to fit different axle sizes. These kits are usually set up to use larger Boost axles, giving you more choices for wheel upgrades.
