About this deal

The audience in their finery are so held by the drama that they have mostly forgotten which tiaras or mantillas or feathers they are wearing. The ladies are choked by strong feelings and long to cry. They search their tiny purses for even tinier handkerchiefs. Weeping at misfortune which is not theirs is a deep pleasure! Rose Tremain has said that she is drawn to narrators on the margins of life, and Lily is just such a narrator. Through Lily, who is a likeable character, and whose joys and fears seem completely understandable, we see the poverty and richness of life in 19th-century London. Underlying Lily’s story, however, but never spelled out, is Tremain’s own anger that historical ills, especially the mistreatment of children in institutions, still exist. I had high hopes for this book. While it did keep my interest (and I read it in one sitting), this is only because I’m interested in the period and the subject. Unfortunately it was quite dull and not the ‘tale of revenge’ expected. It felt like the author was trying to rewrite Hetty Feather for adults.

This is a terrific story, rich and many layered. Heart rending as it often is, it’s also warm, witty and funny. A total treat of a read. Lily is duly heartbroken when she learns that she must return to the hospital, but heartbreak proves to be the least of her sufferings. And in the depiction of these sufferings Tremain finds a surer footing, paring away the histrionics and adopting a flintier register. The Sisters in charge demand not just obedience but gratitude. They don’t get it from Lily, who has known real love and kindness and refuses to play along. Marianne is naive, and for a lot of her life, her naivety stays through to her adulthood and shapes decisions she makes.

Lily endures extreme emotional and physical suffering, much of it meted out by a particularly sadistic repressed lesbian. Later as an adult she builds a life of sorts as a seamstress but she has also committed an as yet undiscovered crime and cannot escape the conviction she is soon to hang. This is a really satisfying read, I felt like I truly got to know the main character and my heart hoped, cared and broke for her. Marianne will remain with me as a friend. This is another book that I think your better off reading blind. I found it to be quite an emotional read. The rawness of the poverty and suffering people suffered in the Victorian era doesn't bare thinking about. The book is descriptively written and the characters felt true to the era and the storyline is captivating on so many levels. I loved this book from beginning to end. Rescued from the aforementioned wolves by a kindly constable, the infant Lily is consigned to the Foundling Hospital. There she is to be inculcated with humility (her mother being a “shameful sinner”) and fitted in due course for some dismal occupation so that her debt to the upright can be discharged. In keeping with these grimly benevolent principles, she is “christened anew”. Henceforth, she will be Lily Mortimer, named for a high-born benefactress, as if to reinforce her own lowly station. – Mail on Sunday Lily tried once again to turn around, to pull free of the nurse, to run to wherever Nellie had gone … ‘Stop that!’ said the nurse. ‘She’s gone and you will not find her. There are no sentimental goodbyes here. We forbid them. Your foster-mother did her duty and that is all. Now, she takes in another baby and you will be forgotten’. One thing we know is that children are often like wild animals when they come to us. You were one such animal – a runaway, weren’t you? And look at you now: quite upright and well behaved and earning your living, but only because we tamed you and brought you to God.’ Powerful… Full of the insights and the shining quality of writing that one can always expect from this accomplished novelist’ Daily Express
