The color quality and sharpness are what you’d expect from DJI: clean, bright, and sharp, at least in the standard color mode. The control software for the Avata is not anything new: it’s just the typical DJI Fly app. However, the new DJI Goggles 2 has a really intuitive user interface and experience. DJI Goggles Integra adopt DJI's flagship O3+ video transmission, which can achieve full HD and low-latency video transmission. The DJI Avata is a better considered and more sedate entry to the world of FPV flying than its predecessor, but it falls into a space between camera drones and FPV hardware that might not satisfy either objective as effectively as more dedicated solutions. Critically, the transmission bandwidth is still up to 50Mbps, so it’s a balance between resolution and framerate, with the new Goggles 2 going for resolution over frames-per-second.

The connection between the drone and the Goggles 2 is Ocusync O3+, the latest version of DJI’s transmission technology. Depending on what region you are flying, O3+ can provide a video and control link at up to 10km, or only 2km if you are based in Europe. In addition to the Avata, DJI announced a new set of head-mounted goggles, the DJI Goggles 2. I’ll say it straight up: these are my favorite set of goggles I’ve ever used. The 155° FOV is only available when the aspect ratio is 4:3, and the video recording specification is 2.7K@50/60fps or 1080p@50fps/60fps; the aspect ratio is 16:9, and the video recording specification is 4K@50/60fps, 2.7K@50/60fps, or 1080p@50/60fps.The only other gripe I have with the design is the SD card and USB-C port placement. Those are located just on the inside of the prop guard and I feel this could have been placed on the actual body under the camera or the top side of the drone for ease of use. This feature was handy on one of our flying days when the wind was gusty. Without HorizonSteady active, the video was at a severe angle even when flying in a straight line. Both these features can be disabled, but for serious cinematographers aiming to save time in post-production, they’re invaluable. If you leave your drone unattended, it could be stolen. One complaint I have about the Motion Controller is the position of the Record button. It's on the left side, essentially under where your thumb rests, and reacts to glancing presses. It's very easy to bump while flying. The FPV goggles show a tally icon during recordings, but it's easy to miss when you're concentrating on flying fast and avoiding crashes. The Avata has a setting to automatically record while it's flying, but even with that on, an accidental tap of the Record button ends recording. DJI should offer an option to disable the Record button altogether to prevent recording interruptions.
