About this deal

Baharroth Blue is a popular paint color in the Warhammer 40K universe, and is often used to paint the armor and machinery of several factions’ armies. The decision to list these specific armies was made based on their common use of Baharroth Blue in their color schemes, as well as their prominence in the Warhammer 40K universe. For the leather I wanted to introduce some red so I used VMC Hull Red and highlighted up with VMC Red Leather to VMC Pale Sand. You can get real bright specular highlights on leather, it helps sell the effect. And a couple scratches here and there do wonders. Gems

Wash the reds with Nuln Oil to darken the robes down more than an Agrax or Carroburg Crimson wash would do. We want some deep rich colors to set off the pale white. Do you like gold? The Adeptus Custodes are the Emperor’s personal bodyguard and his greatest warriors. Each Custodian is a demigod in golden armor, wielding the Imperium’s most finely-wrought weapons, surpassing even the Space Marines in martial prowess and tactical acumen. Simply put: These guys are the best, of the best (of the best). Don’t let Space Marine or Grey Knight players tell you different! The Imperial Fists – One of the original First Founding Space Marine Legions, the Imperial Fists are known for their use of yellow and blue in their color schemes. Baharroth Blue is often used to paint their armor and machinery, making them a perfect army to paint with this color.

Who is Mephiston?

And there you have it. Add any further small details you may want, but they’re all ready to go slay the enemies of the Emperor. Next up I painted some of the Aethermatic Blue on parts of the model that are close to the weapons to give a reflected light effect. On the faces and cloth only apply small amounts, whereas on the metal areas you can go overboard and add a couple layers. Step 4: Highlights and Shadows Acrylic Paints are transparent and the primer can influence the color: If you want a brighter model, consider a neutral or whiter primer, like Mechanicus Standard Grey or Greyseer. And similarly, when I did my Abaddon the Despoiler I used yellow hues on the cape and base from the flame. For those I used Flash Gitz Yellow and Iyanden Yellow for the blending.

Another way to do this process is to build up layers from darkest to lightest. Start with your deep blue and keep adding a little bit of white with each layer, making finer lines as you get lighter. The ‘owl in the room’ here is in step one with painting the lightning streaks. It may just take a little practice to figure out. Avoid doing straight lines, and look at some pictures on the internet- both of real lightning and electrical arcs and at other peoples power weapons. This same process can be done with other colors too using the dark/medium/white scheme. Another cool effect is to build from dark purple into reds and oranges to yellow. Credit: Skails The wings were then highlighted with Administratum Grey (leave some of the previous layer showing).I washed the robes (and mouth) with Druchii Purple, heaviest in the folds, and the chest armour with Casandora Yellow. This gave two distinctly different red tones, which helps differentiate the two big red areas. I then tidied up a bunch of the wash with more Mephiston Red and then hit the high points with Wild Rider Red, as well as the edges of the armour. The eyes and temples have a blue glow, which I replicated with some Teclis Blue and then some Baharroth Blue. The sword lightning I’m not really sure about at this point, but by the time I’d finished it was too late to change – this is just Kantor Blue, Teclis Blue, Baharroth Blue, and then some VMC White. Finally, fitting the Halloween theme, the skulls are Rakarth Flesh, then Ushabti Bone, washed Seraphim Sepia, and then layered Ushabti Bone once again. Codex: Adeptus Custodes is full of insight into the Emperor’s glorious bananas, highlighting their nature, organization and secret wars, but if you want to read more, here are a few books we’d suggest that dive into greater detail on the Custodes.

Pendulin’s Shadowkeepers scheme can be found in a separate article – How to Paint Everything: Adeptus Custodes Shadowkeepers. Ironbreaker– A silver paint that can be used to add a metallic highlight to Baharroth Blue armor and machinery. OSL can be a daunting technique to take on, but it looks more complicated than it is in most cases. It’s one of the best reward-to-time-investment ratio techniques you can learn in the hobby however, and there are enough opportunities to use it in nearly every army that you’ll find reasons to use it over and over. Keep the basic principles in mind, look at reference photos if you need, and keep at it!After that you add lighter tones of the colour on the raised edges in the area of effect, and finally a near white version of the colour at the source itself (Blue Horror for blue, Ulthuan works well too and for almost every colour). Apply some white paint to the centre of the brightest reflected areas e.g. uppermost raised creases in the cloth a line parallel to the arrow etc.. Step 4 / Final Stage Next up, I painted the weapons I wanted to be “power weapons” in Aethermatic Blue (the bows and the long swords). Behold the power of Contrast(™); when applying the Contrast paint be sure to pull the paint away from the middle of the weapons towards the lower and upper parts as this will give you a lighter middle section making it look even brighter there. To be honest they look pretty power weapony already, but I’m known for going OTT on many things so why stop there… Step 2 Note that Aethermatic Blue and Baharroth Blue work extremely well for this. Other colors – especially reds – are much stronger and using Blood Angels red may give you too much tint. Consider looking at shades/washes or thinning your contrast paints before you use them in this step if you’re working with reds. Try some different stuff generally, though. Glazes also work very well for this. Step 3: Highlights
