About this deal

The results were promising: both feet stayed approximately the same temperature for the next two hours. I had to wear goretex boots back in my USFWS days - they're the worst thing for blisters as they hold sweat/water in, imo. and wearing them with socks or just barefoot if I'm not doing a lot of serious hiking (watch your toes, though!

The Dexshell and EDZ I'm looking at aren't cheap but are merino lined which will help with wicking but only so far of course because the sweat can't exit the socks - just the merino layer. Waterproof socks will take twice as long to dry as ordinary socks; you will need multiple pairs for multi-day trips. They are not quite as warm as dry socks, because ½ of the insulation is wet, but they are much warmer than wet socks, and you can always wear another sock under them.I've done some very cold, wet, winter races, and none of my toes have fell off (yet), wearing nothing more than a standard pair of Inov8 or Bridgedale socks, perhaps a pair of merino Inov8 socks if it's exceptionally cold. If I were to do it over again, I would have tied the bottom of my pants shut to slow the influx of water. Please note that this material is very stretchy and one particular glove size can span a number of hand sizes. Boot length is better in boots, and with low shoes the taller socks can keep water from wicking up your mid-layer.

there are plenty of choices for non-waterproof, well-aired, well cushioned, stable trail running or hybrid shoes, which perhaps is the safest way to go. They are also designed with a close fit, including elastic arch support, with the idea being that they won’t become too baggy when drenched with water. Even if they leak (they didn’t—we poured some water inside for testing) they remain warmer than wet socks, because like a wet suit, they hold the water in place so it can warm up.

Water gets in but not too much, and because it's prevented from 'flushing' through it warms up eventually so that you're warm in spite of being wet. In the interest of reducing odor, increasing longevity, and having them ready to wear tomorrow, consider using a powered shoe drier for all shoes, boots, winter gloves, and waterproof socks. On my, mostly April-May Caminos, I have walked with sodden feet in torrential downpours, as well as slogged through ankle-deep wet snow and mud. However, a little trick taught to me years ago is that when you have a substantial break, give your feet, socks and boots a break as well.

give up on waterproof trail running shoes forever, use normal non-waterproof ones when it’s wet (and dry), get wet feet - be sad (and cold!

The first time I bought some I made the mistake of sizing them down a bit and had to send them back because they were too small. I hiked a few miles in them on a poorly-planned trip to Shenandoah National Park last year, and aside from having to stop a few times to dislodge pebbles, they actually worked out pretty well (worn with socks, and with the webbing pulled snug). But I guess it would depend on the individual and the terrain - whether the membrane in the sock is more under attack from your toenails or sand/grit getting into the shoe from outside. Often apparel designed to work in one sporting activity very nicely crosses over to other similar activities.

The Running Lite socks feature a Porelle interlining membrane for high waterproof levels while remaining breathable. We're headed to a bunch of National Parks in the second half of September (we fly back to DC on October 1).They seem to either dry out quickly or else have a bit of a wetsuit-style effect, and don't rub nearly as badly as cotton or nylon.
