About this deal

Slightly Foxed introduces its readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal. I was lucky enough to hitch a ride with Rose and see all the sticky situations she got herself into. I love reading about the effects on the children of immigrant families - living in two worlds with the highest of expectations to succeed, take care of the family, and the selflessness and sacrifice that is required. Enter Rose Zadeh, a young woman given that chance of a life time to escape, to self care, to have a life, and in the incredible city of Paris. The book deals with several themes, including euthanasia, prostitution, the effects of the Holocaust, immigration and aging.

Ghosts deals with love, loss and finding yourself – something any woman in her 20s and 30s can resonate with. Saying that, I usually do most of my reading while travelling and this year I didn’t go anywhere, so it actually took me a while to get in to a routine of making my way through my reading pile! I was so excited to read this book, my first by Ann Patchett, I especially loved the sound of a book centred around a big old house with a whole lot of history.

I felt that Rose’s inner monologue about her father pulled me away from the story quite a bit and just wish there was less of that and more of the present story.

Allow yourself to be angry, be tired, be silly, be passionate – to give yourself a break, and just simply be. He wrote over twenty books, including Glass Art Nouveau to Art Deco, Art Deco, and Art Deco Sculpture as well as monographs on individual artists. Lauren Parvizi, the author of “La Vie, According to Rose,” has written a provocative, memorable, and heartfelt novel. A. Cool takes readers through Clare's journey and inspiration: from her childhood in Minnesota and years in Paris, to the creation of an iconic female-owned American company that responds to women's needs today. As she adventures, she meets several characters who help to move her closer to who she is meant to be as a woman, a daughter, and a sister while also managing her difficult family relationships and a new "friendship" with a classic con man.Again, that could just be because of my dwindling attention span, but while I did enjoy the art heist aspect, it didn’t seem necessary. I resonated with many elements of this story and it was so easy to feel for Rose, even if exact details of our circumstances didn’t match. It’s a really endearing book with some incredibly powerful characters – and the cover deserves a mention too! I don’t think I realised the nature of the material until I started reading it, but it has a similar vibe to My Dark Vanessa.
