About this deal

After publishing Buddhism for Busy People in 2004 and subsequent non-fiction books, I sometimes found myself talking to people who were voracious readers, and had a keen interest in the subjects I wrote about. A delightful little story with a unique narrator and some profound ideas for furthering self development. Among the unexpected joys I have felt, writing this series, has been to discover how much little HHC, Snow Lion, or Rinpoche – she is a cat of many names – and the cast of characters around her, have engaged reader’s hearts as well as minds.

What this book does offer, however, is a multitude of honestly intriguing and thought-provoking life lessons; it is a quick and delightful read. Unfortunately the community I live in does not have any Buddhist centres where I can learn in person. The first time I saw him appear at Washington National Cathedral was on the first anniversary of September 11.Udomljuje ju nitko drugi nego Dalaj lama i ona u njegovoj rezidenciji doživljava razne zgode i nezgode većinom prouzročene njenim mačjim karakterom. The narrator cat immediately experiences the foundation of Buddhist thought; `compassion for all living things'; in action when the Dalai Lama rescues her - half-drowned, starving and near dead - from the gutters of New Delhi.

This is relevant because perhaps the one word that sets Tibetan Buddhism apart from all other traditions is ‘bodhichitta. He has also written a number of non-fiction titles such as: Why Mindfulness is Better than Chocolate, Hurry Up and Meditate, Buddhism for Busy People and Buddhism for Pet Lovers.

As a story, there's not a huge amount of substance, but for those looking for more in their lives who maybe aren't too keen on delving into the genre of self-help/development or spiritual, this is a great read. Featuring a delightful cast of characters, timeless Buddhist wisdom, and His Holiness’s compassion pervading every chapter, The Dalai Lama’s Cat is simply enchanting. You’ll fall in love with the character for sure and it’s a nice break from your heavy fantasy or historical fiction books! Whilst this is, without a doubt, a story about what Buddhism teaches, it is not an exclusively religious story at all: it really is just the story of a cat who happens to be in Buddhist surrounds. The other monks were also fantastic characters and whilst I’ve not looked to see if Michie has portrayed real people, inspirations from real people, or entirely fictitious characters, he has certainly done a wonderful job of putting them on the pages.
