About this deal

In the years that have followed, the group have released more than a dozen holiday-themed records, each building on the success of the previous one. Johnny Cash's take on Christmas classics is exactly what fans of the late singer had come to expect by 1972: a little snarling and a little holy, and reliably produced with the right degree of each. Christmastime brings people together almost as well as music, which means holiday tunes are essentially at the crux of spreading cheer for all to hear. The Christmas music zeitgeist may be all over the map, bouncing between timeless jazz and modern hip-hop remixes, but there are many mainstays that are absolute musts.

which was a success, spending four weeks at number one on the UK Compilation Chart and ending up as the third biggest selling compilation of the year. Several editions have been released since the first album, Power Ballads – The Greatest Driving Anthems in the World.

Having given Oasis two songs on every album in the series, this is the first volume not to feature any of the bands' music; it does however feature The Chemical Brothers' "Setting Sun" which is co-written by Noel Gallagher and features him on lead vocals. The expanded, two-disc 1984 version is a veritable schmaltz blizzard of vaguely terrifying good cheer. Dynamite has something in his bottomless gift bag for every girl and boy the world over: On the blazing title track from 1970's Hey America It's Christmas, he implores, "White or black, blue or green/ Even a man I've never seen/Let's get together!

This album, despite probably being bought about two decades ago, never gets old – in a metaphorical sense anyway – the disc itself is covered in scratches and most of the songs feature a few jerkily repeated lines. Some may disagree – namely everyone around me who is subjected to to a medley of Christmas classics in my less than tolerable voice. K. Christmas singles and college-radio novelties perfect for that last show you do before winter break. The strong Liverpudlian twang on each of the gifts of Christmas is a challenge for a family from Essex, but one we most definitely rise to. This compilation earned its place in history by featuring the first track ever released by OutKast, Player’s Ball. The series started to become subject to popular culture parodies, such as spoof band Shirehorses titling their first album from 1997 The worst. The star, though, is Stevie Wonder: his original version of Someday at Christmas crushes Lizzo’s current cover, and his more upbeat What Christmas Means to Me is a joy. Quite sparsely arranged, it allows the Roche sisters’ harmonies to dazzle – the acappella Star of Wonder is magical – while their New York-accented Winter Wonderland is an absolute hoot. His takes on the classics are pretty and lovably dog-eared (see his banjo-fied "Amazing Grace") and his originals add wrinkles to the canon. You might expect gleeful schlock from film director John Waters, and there’s plenty of it here – singing kids, the Chipmunks, Rudolph and the Gang’s sweary Here Comes Fatty Claus – but the genius of A John Waters Christmas is how he mixes the weirdness and laughs with sheer loveliness, as on Stormy Weather’s doo-wop Christmas Time Is Coming.
