About this deal

Elements of this fable will surely resonate with contemporary readers living in a world where “alternative” facts and competing narratives have driven people to violence and death, and a virus is just one of the natural, social, political, and cultural upheavals that have polarized the population and led them to perceive those on the other side of the divide as monsters or idiots.

In Devlin's ( You Will Grow Into Them) latest, the world is healing in the aftermath of a deadly mass delusion caused by an infection that induces hallucinations of zombies in its victims. The ending reminds the reader, it’s truly hard to trust anyone, especially if you can’t trust yourself, but it’s what one must do. They begin a journey across the uninhabited land, discovering new facts and realities along the way. That ending was a it was all a dream one, but it works because all the clues are there cleverly worked in. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied. It makes sense that the narrator wouldn't pause his tale and say something like "As you know, we are Australian. It'll be like a purge of the banal, and all the trivia of the world will be the first down the plughole. When I say this is a love story, I mean this is a story about someone who believed in something impossible and beautiful and dangerous with such strength of character and devotion that they followed the thread of it all the way to the very end, no matter what the world threw at them.

And Then I Woke Up is a story told by a man who has lived through this apocalyptic event where many people believe that others are turning into zombies. It’s a nightmare scenario, when our friends and loved ones don’t just turn on us, but turn into monsters by doing so. And Then I Woke Up feels like a difficult title to rate and review, because it was a difficult title to form a solid opinion on. Spence was an engrossing narrator, dancing between hard facts and his subjective perspective with the ease of a drunken marionette. Each piece of evidence divided us, and with each line drawn, a wider slice of reality was thrown into question.
