About this deal

The reason for the incoherence in message is that Wiest relies heavily on other people's work, mainly pop psychology self help books to the tune of Brene Brown and Malcolm Gladwell (no hate), and then distils their books into bite-sized portions. Because of our capacity to imagine, we were able to build Earth as it is today out of virtually nothing. In fact, there were likely as many as six different types of humans in existence: Homo sapiens, Homo neanderthalensis, Homo soloensis, Homo erectus, etc. But it felt as if it was just a collection of “inspirational” Instagram quotes that ever-slightly make you think that there really *is* something wrong with your life and the way you are living it.

It's not like people like me haven't spent hours, days, months thinking about what their purpose is on this planet. She continually tells the reader to replace one anxiety with another, to trade in fixations from one harmful spiral to another, different harmful spiral. Each essay provides a unique insight into the complexities of the human experience, challenging conventional wisdom and inviting readers to expand their thinking. It uses aspects of positive psychology to appeal to people who believe in data and science (it uses the phrase “emotional intelligence” endless amount of times), it uses philosophy for people who prefer that approach, and it uses extremely vague phrases to appeal to anyone else who might pick up the book (For example, “being routinely un-routine”… what does that even mean? Il ne correspond pas aux gens voulant devenir la meilleure version d'eux-mêmes mais plutot à des gens malades mentalements ou dépressifs. The author combines Jungian psychology and ancient Eastern and Western philosophical theories, starting from various aspects such as emotional management, intimate relationship, daily habits, self-cognition, lifestyle, etc. Thought this was going to be a collection of essays but it's actually not it's just bullet pointed lists of advice. What if, after changing the way you think, you could enhance your life experience further by controlling the way you feel?

Also, side note - I'm not sure if it was my edition or WHAT but the formatting was insane for a lot of essay titles.I realized that being in a continuous state of flow is neither possible nor desirable (at least for me). Over the past few years, Brianna Wiest has gained renown for her deeply moving, philosophical writing. I think a lot of go through life feeling stuck and not sure where we're headed, but this book has shown me how much I have changed and accomplished and how proud of myself I should be.
