About this deal

But then something happened that no one expected, turning the world upside down in a way no one could have ever imagined. After thoroughly enjoying Confessions of a 40-Year-Old F***Up, I was thrilled to hear there was a sequel.

The story takes us through Nell's ups and downs, from her eccentric group of friends to her intriguing relationship with Edward, the boyfriend who maintains spreadsheets for everything. It was just as funny and relatable as the first one and was great to catch up with how nell and her life was progressing since the first instalment and was like having a catch up with an old friend. In books, TV shows and films, everything is dialled up to be fantasy, the perfect wife/husband, the perfect children, the perfect house, the perfect figure, the perfect job, the perfect life. She now lives in London with her husband – though often visits her mother in the Yorkshire Dales – and has had 12 previous books published. There is humour – plenty of it - and some irreverence, but there are also moments of poignancy and it is more thought-provoking between the laughter.Although creating your own coffin… maybe I’d pass on that 😂 This sequel to Confessions of a forty-something f**k up did not disappoint! Yorkshire born and raised, Alex currently lives in South-West London with Mr California and their Bosnian rescue dog and when she's not spending time writing or travelling, she's spending far too much time on Instagram being reminded that she should be exercising regularly, drinking enough water, practising mindfulness and feeling blessed.

I was worried I wouldn't remember what happened in the first one seeing as it has been over 2 years since I read it, but you're instantly thrown into it. Nell continues to navigate her forties, feeling like a failure, mourning the life she left behind and trying to move forwards but something is holding her back and in this novel she has to face that.

Nell’s life seems to be going as planned for once, she survived the Covid lockdowns, she’s getting married, she’s still busy writing obituaries, her friends are ok and her frenemy Annabel isn’t giving her such a hard time lately… That is until everything seems to fall apart again. Nell negotiates the minefield of parents and friends, and faces the prospect of becoming a stepmum to twin boys – well, young men - while harbouring her own very private and secret disappointment. FOGO – fear of going out, of dragging clothes from the wardrobe which haven’t seen the light of day since March 2020 and seem to have shrunk; seeing people we haven’t seen in over a year and having to overcome the awkward, ‘Do we elbow bump or hug?

They don't stand out, she's not taking us for fools and repeating the first book, but she's cleverly worked the important bits into the earlier chapters which really helped get into the flow. You could read it as a standalone book, as the beginning does a great recap of book one, yet there's loads more new content to laugh at and enjoy. So full *ahem* confession - I still hadn’t read the first book when I picked this up and assumed that because I’d watched the TV series based on it, I’d be good to go. Mike Gayle, author of All The Lonely People Nell’s journey to mid-life happiness is hilarious, moving and filled with clear-eyed wisdom about what it means to be a woman of any age, proving that the best happy ever afters come when you fall in love with life.
