About this deal
The problem ends up being the same thing that I mentioned in our review of Codenames and Codenames Pictures – I’m not a fan of games that replace conversation with intense silences, even if those silences are full of comedy potential. I usually don’t like when sand timers are used in games (see our Spaceteam review), but it is definitely necessary in this one and can’t be replaced by a digital timer.
Not like any other game I’ve played before, it’s really good fun and gets you thinking and playing in a new way. This is a fantastic tool for ruining relationships, frustrating your wife, or for looking like a fool. There’s a number of other small rules about the dwarf moving through certain low arches, the wizard seeing the future tiles, and the barbarian smashing TV cameras – but these are pasted on for complexity and a smidgen more theme.
I can say that it is pure fun now, and if you, like me, are a fan of cooperative games with a gimmick, you owe it to yourself to try Magic Maze. Beholder: a Hero and the Beholder cannot stand or pass through a Mall tile where the other type of pawn is standing. Working together we need to uncover the map, get the characters their items, and escort them all to the exit. This is essentially a massive red pawn that you can slam in front of someone when you think they should be taking a move. If you’re not careful the faster player of the two will sort of box out the other player (especially if the group tends to focus on moving one pawn at a time) and the other player will just sit around, kind of bored.
